1. 1. Visitor’s Temple. This room, 40’x60’, was the public facing prayer temple. 8 pews are lined up in facing the long end of the room, long abandoned now. At the long end, there is an altar of obsidian, and behind it is a bronze platform with a massive golden statue of the God of Chaos upon it. (The statue is enchanted and basically indestructible; any attempt to pry pieces off of it invokes a 24 hour curse upon the defiler, with a WIS DC 15 save to avoid.) There are small keyholes in the altar, platform and statue that can be observed by anyone who closely inspects them; these keyholes fit the keys found throughout the level. If all are entered and turned, they open a secret door at the back of the chamber to the second level. But before dealing with that, they will have to deal with the two Priests of Chaos, who are undead and still attend to the statue. They look desiccated like liches, but have stats equivalent to Priest NPCs. Each of them carries an obsidian mace of chaos +1, which has a 1 in 8 chance to cause a random effect on a strike (table to be done later). This chaos effect only works if the wielder is Chaotic.

1. 30. Infernal banquet. This large room, 60’x60’, used to be the welcome banquet hall for the temple. It has an adjoining kitchen that is 15’x60’. There is still a welcome banquet of sorts, though the PCs have a very different role! There are two long tables in the center of the room, and these tables are staffed by zombie guests, 20 in total. The tables are set with cutlery and complete place settings, though all are worn and tarnished with age. 8 zombie servers and cooks serve the tables, and when the party enters, they attempt in pairs to grapple and restrain party members. If they are successful, they take that member to the table, where they are placed in front of two zombies who attempt to feast (treat their cutlery as a dagger for damage). The zombie guests will not stand up to attack unless they are directly attacked themselves by a non-restrained party member. The kitchen area is mostly barren, though under one of the two (non-operable) stoves is a magical kitchen knife that serves as a +1 dagger. If the tableware is inspected, one goblet turns out to be extremely tarnished silver and is worth 15 gp.

1. 28. Mad sculptress room. This massive 50’x 70’ chamber contains perhaps two dozen statues, a variety of humans, demihumans and beasts. Concerned characters will likely expect a medusa, but in fact the creature who lairs here is a reverse medusa – all the same stats, but instead of a petrifying gaze, its gaze brings life to one lifeless statue per round, as desired. This insane creature, formerly a human sculptor, was “blessed” by the chaos god when she prayed for greater skill to make her creations come to life. She remains out of sight near the rear of the room for the first few rounds, bringing her statues to life to attack the party. At the back of the room is a door to her bedchambers and a table containing sculpting equipment. 29. Sculptress bedchamber. This room contains a bed, nightstand, dressing table, and wardrobe. The mirror on the dressing table has been shattered. The wardrobe contains a variety of unremarkable clothes piled haphazardly. Anyone who removes all the clothes from the wardrobe finds a Figurine of Wondrous Power at the bottom, an Ebony Fly.

1. 2. Test of Confidence. In the center of this small chamber is a dais. On the opposite wall is a door, and above the door is written: “Place your confidence in the God. Leave your weapons here.” There is no direct consequence to following or ignoring the rules, but following the instructions improves the Dungeon Mood by 3 (max 5) and ignoring the instructions reduces the Dungeon Mood by 3 (min -5). 3. Zombie fisticuffs. This 30’x50’ room at first appears to be empty, with only a single door at the far end. When the PCs enter, however, zombies burst from the ground, one for each PC present. The difficulty of the encounter depends upon the prior actions of the PCs and the Dungeon Mood. If the PCs gave up their weapons, and the Dungeon Mood is positive, the zombies have only 5 HP each. If the PCs gave up their weapons, and the Dungeon Mood is neutral, the zombies have 10 HP each. If the PCs kept their weapons, and the Dungeon Mood is neutral, the zombies have 15 HP each. If the PCs kept their weapons and the Dungeon Mood is hostile, the zombies have full HP and do an extra point of damage on a slam attack (1d6+2). In this case, the zombies seem particularly enraged to the PCs. The dancing technique of room 1 can be used to turn the undead; the door at the opposite end of the room will only open once all the zombies are turned or destroyed. The zombies have no treasure, but are wearing the tattered clothes of former Chaos God cultists.

1. 1. Entrance to the trials. The stairs from the first level spiral down into this grand circular chamber from the North. Open corridors lead east, west, and south. The walls are decorated with overwhelming scenes of humans and demihumans interacting with various monsters. (Think Garden of Earthly Delights). A human is seen approaching a fiery figure for a hug, someone appears to be dancing before a skeleton, which looks repulsed, another figure juggles before a demon that is on its knees, another figure is mooning an owlbear, which is falling backwards, an elf is looking through his index finger and thumb at a human-size giant, and a halfling stands on their head, watching an animated suit of armor fly into the air.

2. These are not mere decorations, but actual actions PCs can use against creatures on this level. Hugging a creature of fire (grapple attack) automatically extinguishes it and destroys it. Dancing before undead will acts as a Priest’s turn ability at 5th level. Juggling before an individual demon will cause it physical pain, 2d10 force damage each round the juggler can maintain their action. Mooning any monstrosity will cause it to fall asleep if it fails a DC 18 CON save. Using index finger and thumb to “squish” a giant will have the effect of a Reduce spell on it (no save). Standing on one’s head in front of any construct will cause it to fly to the ceiling, taking 1d6 falling damage for each 10’ and causing it to land prone.

1. 1. Corridor of choices. Beyond the Air Plane, there is a four-way intersection. On the floor, in a very ornate mosaic pattern, directions are written. To the left is written “Here be dragons,” to the right is written “Deadly trap,” and ahead is written “Test of Insight.” 2. Here be dragons. True to the warning sign, this 50’x50’ room contains ten dragons – faerie dragons, to be precise. The chamber is outfitted with playthings, bedding, food, and perches for the cat-sized creatures. If anyone can speak Draconic or Sylvan, they can communicate with the good-natured beasts, which are always happy to welcome visitors. They describe that they live a life of luxury here, where all their needs are attended to; food magically appears every day for them, matching whatever they desire, and if they wish hard enough for some new item or toy, it appears within several days. These dragons have been here for a long time, and have seen many explorers pass their way – none have returned, sadly. With a DC 18 Persuasion check, the PCs can convince one of the dragons to accompany them as a companion, though it knows nothing about the area outside its chamber.

1. 4. Air plane crossover. The corridor opens up suddenly into a vast open space, where blue sky appears to be all around – including below. A breach into the elemental plane of air, perhaps? There is another doorway level with the first, about 50’ away, and no immediately obvious way to get there. There is a tremendous wind upwelling from below, and anyone who asks – and makes a Perception DC 12 check – realizes that the air is strong enough to support them on their bellies to float to the other side. An Athletics or Acrobatics check is needed to progress every 10’, and a max of 10’ per round. When the first PC makes it over halfway across, the party is set upon by two air mephits that blended almost perfectly into the blue sky. If a character tries to cross wearing heavy armor, they find themselves too heavy to fully float, and they sink 1’ per round, potentially becoming lost forever if they are not rescued soon. This possibility can be recognized with a Perception DC 12 check, again.

1. 9. The Way Forward. The passage north of Room 1 leads to a massive, shining glass portal, that gives off its own light. Written upon it is the following phrase, which will appear to each reader as if written in their native language: The Bell of Savamor will open the way with its dissonant tone But to claim the Bell, one must gain wisdom from the book of Anapho The Book of Anapho lies past darkened passages very far Only illuminated by the Candle of Mal’khar If the complete Bell of Savamor is rung in this room, the glass portal shatters, leaving the room in darkness. If the PCs have no alternative light sources already prepared, they are beset by a pair of Shadows; otherwise, the way is clear for them to pass to the 3rd level.

1. 7. Deadly trap. The 10’ wide corridor here seems to stretch onwards for quite a ways, but this is an illusion to draw the players into the deadly trap, which depends on the current Dungeon Mood. If the mood is positive, the PCs find themselves suddenly bowled over by a collection of spectral puppies, who prance around and lick them happily before vanishing in a flash of light, leaving the PCs with 5 bonus hit points. If the mood is neutral, a single, slow-moving and rusted spear trap springs from the wall, targeting one random PC. The trap, due to its poor condition, requires only a DC 10 Dex save to avoid, and it causes only 1 hp of damage – the spearhead is broken off and missing. If the Dungeon Mood is hostile, the ceiling opens up above the PCs, spilling a tub worth of rot grub on top of them. Each PC must make a DC 15 Dex save or be infected by 1d4 parasites, which must be dealt with in the usual manner.

1. 12. Corridor of Night. Beyond the central door of the Giant’s room, the PCs are faced with a corridor of inky blackness through which no normal light can penetrate. Only the Candle of Mal’khar can illuminate this blackness, revealing a relatively small but twisting maze of passages. If the Dungeon Mood is hostile, the PCs will find themselves stalked by a Wraith in the twisting corridors; otherwise, they are able to maneuver the passages with some unease but no ill effects. Anyone attempting to enter the darkness without the Candle will stumble out again after 1d4 rounds, 1d8 HP poorer, with no recollection of what happened other than a feeling that they were stalked through the darkness. Such PCs are Frightened for an hour afterwards.

1. 11. Test of Greed. This 20’x30’ room contains a large amount of gold coins, heaped upon the ground and spilling out of a variety of chests, at least 5000 gp. Written upon the back wall of the chamber, in large golden embossed letters, is the phrase “TEST OF GREED.” This will likely make players nervous! The PCs can collect a certain amount of coinage per person, based upon the Dungeon Mood. If the mood is Positive, the PCs can collect 100 gp each without ill effect; if the mood is Neutral, they can collect 50 gp each. If the mood is Negative, they can get only 25 gp each. Going over this amount causes the remaining coins in the room to become tiny animated creatures with teeth, acting as 4 Insect Swarms. Nothing else remains of the coins once the swarms are destroyed, leaving the PCs with whatever they had already collected. Curiously, the golden letters on the back wall can be pried off, and are worth 20 gp each; behind the letter G is a small cavity holding a leather bag, an empty Bag of Holding. If PCs take money but not too much, the Dungeon Mood increases by 2; if they take too much, it decreases by 2. If they take nothing, the Dungeon Mood decreases by 3 – again, the Chaos God hates a coward! If they take the letters on the wall (and bag) but nothing else, the Dungeon Mood increases by 3, due to their cleverness.

1. 10. The Sleeping Giant. In the middle of this 40’x40’ high-ceilinged room is a large chair, and in this chair is a Fire Giant. The giant has clearly been here a long time, as it is covered with cobwebs and dust. However, as the players enter the room by the only unlocked door, they see the giant shift and frown in the midst of a dream. This giant has been magically compelled to sleep, and has been here for centuries. Around its neck is a large key that matches the three (human-sized) iron doors on the other three walls. While sitting in the chair, the giant still has about 12’ of height, and the key is at neck level at roughly 10’. Any loud noise or significant disturbance will awaken the giant, who will grab the greatsword at his side to attack. PCs must be clever if they want to get the key from the leather cord on the giant’s neck without waking him; consider it a DC 16 Stealth check for any removal attempt, with advantage or disadvantage depending on how good (or bad) the plan is. The giant can also be shrunk down to size using the trick of room 1, making the Stealth check much easier (DC 10) to grab the key. If the giant is awakened and either his sword is missing or he has been shrunk down to size, some quick negotiating can make him pause his attack, especially if the PCs declare that they can help the giant leave this chamber (he cannot exit easily at his normal height). A DC 12 Persuasion check will convince him not to attack and give the key freely.

1. 15. Potopus. Past a short corridor from the right door of the Sleeping Giant’s room lies a30’x30’ chamber of red granite, with bronze braziers burning in the corners. In the center of the chamber is a large pot, 6’ in diameter and 3’deep, steam rising from the boiling water within. As the PCs enter, the pot raises itself up on eight mechanical chain-like tentacles and begins an attack: it is a Potopus. Treat as a Giant Octopus, but its tentacle attacks deal no damage: instead, anyone grappled by a tentacle is dropped into the boiling pot on the next turn, taking 2d6 fire damage on the start of their next turn. Escaping the pot requires a DC 12 Athletics check. The Potopus is another Chaos God test, and it will employ one tentacle per round to attack for every 2 PCs present; the other tentacles will hang back and be used for mobility. The Potopus is classified as a Construct, and so the head-stand trick of room 1 will work on it: the Potopus will fly up, strike the ceiling, spill its boiling water, and fall back to the ground with a loud clang. With no water as a weapon. The Potopus will cease attacking and basically give a tentacle shrug. If attacks continue, it pulls the tentacles back underneath itself where it is shielded from attacks. Any other clever PC approach to tipping the Potopus and making it spill will have the same effect.

2. If the PCs successfully drain the Potopus, the Dungeon Mood increases by 1; if they destroy it, the mood decreases by 1. Don’t Say “The.” The exit to the corridor of night faces a door that has written on it, “Don’t say ‘the.’” Beyond the door is a massive chamber, 400’x400’, whose ceiling has an illusion of a bright blue sky with puffy white clouds within it. The chamber contains a village of 6 homes and a farm plot, with 25 villagers living within it. The villagers are extremely friendly and insist on the PCs joining them for dinner. They tell the PCs that they will then give them the key to the next chamber. The challenge here is that the PCs must have a conversation with the villagers, and themselves, without saying the word “the.” If they do, the villagers immediately transform into violent and decaying zombies who attack without mercy. PCs will probably be forced to flee the chamber, and the zombies will not pursue outside of this room; the village completely resets after 24 hours. The key can be found in the mayor’s home, where the dinner is held; it is kept in an ornate ceramic vase on the fireplace mantle. If the key is grabbed before dinner is served, or the villagers are attacked preemptively, the villagers also transform into zombies. If the farm plot is inspected, there is a particularly shiny shovel sticking from the earth. This shovel can be used as a +1 battleaxe.

1. 17. Owlbear lair. The corridor is broken at this point by a natural rift, presumably a long-ago earthquake – or perhaps just another clever test? The chamber is filled with bones of animals like deer – and a few humans. This is the lair of an owlbear, which steps from the shadows with a shriek when the PCs enter. As described in room 1, mooning the owlbear can give the players a magical advantage, if they’re willing to take the embarrassing risk. A tunnel on the far side of the chamber, wide enough for the owlbear to pass through, winds upward and eventually leads to the outside, where the entrance is hard to see. This can serve as a way for PCs to get some rest outside of the dungeon, if desired. If the bones on the floor of the chamber are searched, every 5 minutes of searching can discover, in order, 58 gp, a potion of greater healing, a silver bracelet worth 25 gp, 5 arrows +1, and a flail +1.

1. 19. Memento Mori. This chamber is 50’x50’, and has nine tombstones equally spaced within them. Investigations of the tombstones shows that most of them possess memorials to adventurers who have died in the trials of this level. For example: Here lies Rognon Glorysurge. He was dinner for an owlbear. Here lies Kargon Sudz. He brought a sword to a zombie fistfight. Here lies Tulbas Pondimal. He awakened an angry giant. Here lies Nan Nerosk. She said “the.” Fill in the rest as needed. The last grave is in fact open, and the tombstone reads “Here lies <random PC name>. They were dragged to their grave by angry undead.” When this message is read, Zombies burst from the other 8 graves and advance on the named PC. They attempt to grapple that PC and drag them into the open grave; once that is done, the remaining zombies will attempt to push dirt on top of them. It takes 12 rounds of effort to fill the grave completely, with each free zombie contributing one round of effort. The zombies will not attack anyone other than the targeted PC, even if attacked themselves. In the pocket of one of the slain zombies is a Wand of Magic Missiles.

1. 21. Flaming guardians. The corridor here opens into a natural cavern, which glows red from the presence of 4 bubbling craters filled with magma. When the PCs enter, giant fiery spiders rise up on their spindly legs and attack. There is one spider per PC, up to a maximum of 4. These are Magma Spiders – treat as Giant Spiders, except instead of a web attack they can spew lava as an attack, causing 2d6 fire damage on a hit. Three other doorways lead out from this chamber. If anyone is unfortunate enough to fall into a magma pool, they take 4d6 fire damage per turn, half on a DC14 CON save. The hugging approach of room 1 works well on the spiders here: a successful hug attack causes no damage to the PC, but instantly destroys the spider.
