The real story: It has been a hard year for crops overall, and most have done poorly. However, Gismon has access to a rare herb that works as a good fertilizer and water retainer, a secret that has been in her family for ages, from when they were nobility themselves. She finds this herb only at night in the forest, where she also keeps a hidden stash of her family treasure, and has been using it to keep her own crops healthy. The Viscount must pay taxes to Serle for the land holdings he has, and because of the poor showing, he is low on funds. He suspects that Gismon has funds he can use to pay his debt, and a witch trial will allow him to claim all of GIsmon’s property if she is found guilty. The law that a witch’s property is forfeit was passed by Serle years earlier. The Viscount offered Topher an easing of his taxes in exchange for his false testimony against Gismon (though he had witnessed her going into the forest at night). This story, and the innocence of Gismon and the guilt of the Viscount, can be teased out through interrogation and questioning of the various parties – a good roleplaying opportunity. Gismon will be hesitant to speak of her own hidden funds and soil treatment, and it must be coaxed out of her.
