    @clacke @futzle What about messages delivered locally by services (e.g. failed crons to root@localhost), which you then read with a client by directly accessing your mbox file / maildir? Is that email?

    @futzle I'm sure email predates POP3, SMTP and IMAP. So that would also make those "not real email" either, I guess?

    @zkat All the IT companies I worked for were obsessed with cranking out deliverables, and salespeople lied through their teeth and promessed ridiculous things in impossible times. That is how you get dozens of hours of overtime each month, absolutely chaotic projects, and a revolving door turnover, which only contributes to more instability and technical debt.

    @c0debabe I remember an ex boss of mine complaining of exactly this, saying "they come here, we train them, they play in the first category (a metaphor related to football) for a year, then leave".

    You can imagine how employees were treated.

    @lioness I personally use subtitles because the sound mix on everything nowadays is a fucking torture to watch. Sound effects are for some reason crazy loud, so you're listening to some dialogue, and then some unnecessarily loud crash or bang or boom or whatever happens, and it upsets me quite a bit. The option of having to sit with the remote in my hand, and reduce and increase volume constantly, is a pain in the ass. I run shows and movies through a compressor (yes, I'm that crazy) but it doesn't fix the issue completely. So I end up still having to watch things at a relatively low volume anyway, and in the process dialogue loses some intelligibility. Ergo, subtitles

    @clacke It doesn't much matter when you're 40 and you move around in social circles with people around your age. Also growing up in an intensely homophobic world has shaped my psique in a way where I inherently can't trust straight people with anything regarding the queer aspects of my life.

    @DawnPaladin I want to run my own server, and I actually paid quite a sum (because of dollar to local currency excjange) to register the domain and get a DNS service... So yeah. It's a pretty stupid statement

    Also while I'm torn on whether to set up Matrix or Jabber for a personal chat server, someone I know actually opted it for the stable and dependables Jabber, and hosts it in Raspberry PI.

    @clacke To their credit they thought it was a different planet because something had happened to the star (I think?) and the orbits shifted. Also it was that other ship that landed, the one were Chekov was serving. Then they get the mind control bugs
