That kind of jump doesn't seem likely to represent mass human behavior, that's why I was looking for what kind of technical artifact it could be.

Here is the fatal flaw in his argument: He claims that anything he does as president falls within the outer perimeter of his duties.

I found the brief he is quoting. You can see the original brief he is citing in screenshots #2 and #3.
Well, goodness. The brief he is citing says the language of incitement is not part of a president's duties.
The main point: An amicus brief is not law. It isn't authority for anything.

Update #2 (for today): #FediFollows now offers the option to download a CSV with the Mastodon accounts visible on the screen. The list is formatted so that you can upload it to Mastodon, and automatically start following those accounts. Also: there will be more updates very soon that will make it *even easier* to follow from the landing page.

@strypey It could be different in other countries, but in the US, newspapers were already in serious decline before the WWW burst onto the scene. In major cities across the country, the #2 paper either closed or merged backend operations with their main competitor.
I believe it was the early 1980s when the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner closed, leaving the Los Angeles Times as the dominant and sole regional paper for Southern California. Meanwhile, local papers in many areas went under common ownership and consolidated production with neighboring areas' papers to survive.
I think the death knell in SoCal was when one or two major radio stations went all news & traffic and one of the major television stations had local news from 16:30 to 19:00 Monday through Friday. Why do you need to buy & read the paper to see stories you heard about the night before over broadcast media? -

That actually happened at a place I worked. I was the shift manager on duty at the time, too.
My reaction was to shut down the playground. I was not about to ask my subordinates to do something I would not.
We were also slammed that whole weekend, so it was completely understandable that I "did not have the staff available" to clean it. And, yes, I felt bad for the person on the next shift that got assigned to clean it. -

@codewiz @maiyannah Slack nailed identity? You have a new one for each community, and in tighter communities you even have to tie each identity to a different mail address.
Centralization makes points #2 and #3 easy.
If you defederate and make registration invite-only, you have solved abuse exactly the way Slack did.
#5 is a problem when self-hosting on a phone, I'm aware. Easy and secure backups is a hard #userops problem.
Centralization making everything easy doesn't mean we shouldn't work on solving decentralization and ultimately p2p. -

@iona HK is worth visiting for several reasons. #1 is food, #2 is just walking around in the world's overwhelmingly scyscraper-densest place and going up in some of them for the view, and then there are some stark contrasts between the ancient and the hypermodern to enjoy.
For the cyberpunk experience, you can get some of it by just going to obscure warehouses and meet small businesses, and you can get some of it by going to the electronic markets in Sham Shui Po. But the real deal is Shenzhen. They have like 200+ makerspaces and markets where you can buy every component imaginable.
While staying in Hong Kong, one can make visa-less day trips to Shenzhen. -

I think it was the latter, and the hype (and the destructive form) is the latter, but the real productive outcome that has matured out of it is the former.
So to comment on my own post #2 in this convo:
