Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Monday, 27-Jun-2022 17:44:17 UTC Cy @I_Will_Wobble That small-business owner doesn't deserve to be disregarded and mistreated like that, and as soon as they give up the power to do the same thing to their workers, then their concerns should be addressed! You shouldn't leave your company high and dry, unless say for instance the company is the private property of someone else, and you're just an employee with no say over company decisions.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 22-May-2022 09:16:39 UTC Cy @humanetech Right, so it reads like some starry eyed n00b, but it was actually written to be deliberately obtuse, to add barriers to entry in hopes of making their professional position more secure at the expense of all the actual n00bs.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 22-May-2022 09:16:38 UTC Cy @humanetech There are many professions where the people are compassionate and kind, until you start trying to enter the field, especially the ones that people sweated and cried over. People like being important, and needed, so it's tempting to say things like "The server MUST accept a valid [ActivityStreams] object that isn't a subtype of Activity in the POST request to the outbox" even though that just make things complicated.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Sunday, 22-May-2022 08:05:19 UTC Cy The #ActivityPub standard reads like someone who just discovered what "the programming" is.
> For federated servers performing delivery to a third party server, delivery SHOULD be performed asynchronously
Why is that in the specification? Just because some starry eyed n00b heard of "asynchronous," and was just specifying whatever they could think of that sounded like it'd be super cool, even though it has nothing to do with the protocol. -
Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Friday, 25-Mar-2022 06:05:00 UTC Cy @lightweight @bob Careful not to let your noblisse oblige make you out to be a huge douche. People privilege you when they worry that you can change things, and also when they think it'll keep us divided and fragmented. That means you MIGHT have an opportunity to make a difference. If you do, then by all means screw over the jerks giving you false privilege, but it's your accomplishments that matter, not whether you are privileged.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Wednesday, 23-Mar-2022 11:04:02 UTC Cy @mhoye To be fair, I'd rather people see me pooping than have private corporations getting a ton of data on my emotional mood, financial security, and responsiveness to ads.
For these manipulators, it's not just about stripping you of your dignity. It's about control. Privacy is the agency you have over your freedom from slavery. -
Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 10-Mar-2022 12:11:54 UTC Cy @strypey I think you might be overlooking the fact that people are forcing us to be ignorant, at pain of death in some cases. The "first world" has never been so ignorant and disconnected in this generation since at least the invention of the printing press. Who are we supposed to trust? Our pastor? They're the most corrupt of all! Our neighbor? Never met him. Too many cars to be safe out front. Our town council? They don't even know we exist!
-
Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 10-Mar-2022 12:11:53 UTC Cy @strypey Not that we can't fight against them. But there are massively funded campaigns to keep us ignorant and alone, helpless to find solidarity, and you have to take that into account before you despair at people's apparent inability to learn to be decent. We can learn, we're just under a lot of fire right now, so it seems like we can't.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 10-Mar-2022 12:11:53 UTC Cy @strypey Lodges, mentors, apprenticeship, sewing circles, militias, unions, all systematically dismantled to make us placid, compliant workers. All we do is work, and raise children, and vanishingly few of us have any connections to anyone with the power to investigate something and find out the truth. The Internet should have saved us, but they've been sabatoging it since day one with bullshit and bullying, forcing us to be consumers, not people.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 24-Feb-2022 08:33:07 UTC Cy @ajroach42 To be fair, a lot of the early computers were gigantic monolithic behemoths designed from the start to further the profits of large corporations. It was only after they started making the "Personal Computer" that computers became more accessible to the average human.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 03-Feb-2022 03:03:22 UTC Cy @marnanel To be fair, the answer was "we only use that provision sparingly against those who pose a serious threat to the UK whose conduct involves very high harm." Currently "being Jewish" does not qualify as a serious threat, or very high harm. It did in the antisemetic UK of the 1940's, but then most of us kinda realized that people are a teensy bit too easy to manipulate when you blind them with hatred.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 03-Feb-2022 03:03:21 UTC Cy @emacsen @marnanel But I would also check to see if these "Tories" were pushing harder to persecute trans people and Jews. Haters will try to sabatoge others by framing their opponents for what they themselves do, after all. It affects you if somewhere down the line, you expect to be in danger, which is what you should expect when people who hate your group are slowly gaining power even elsewhere in the world.

Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 03-Feb-2022 03:03:21 UTC Cy @emacsen @marnanel I only said make trouble for you, because you said you were Jewish. If I heard someone accuse the Labour leadership of technically kicking trans people out of the country b/c there's no restrooms they're allowed in, and Labour was like "uhhhh w-we uh, can't say I mean what are the chances I don't speak English duhhh" I'd be pretty pissed at them, and glad to see them gone.
-
Cy (cy@mstdn.io)'s status on Thursday, 03-Feb-2022 03:03:13 UTC Cy @emacsen Is the "shitshow of a Tory government" less likely to make trouble for you because you're Jewish?
I honestly don't know. Just something I thought you might want to ask. -
