@clacke The assumption that it was written by past you is of course only fair because it's based on the principle that one is much more likely to get heart palpitations from moderately bad code when they were the author, while code written by somebody else will have to be really bad to cause them. -

@FLOX_advocate @LovesTha Also, if the event is (partially) virtual/remote please please please just add the times already in UTC: it makes it so much easier for anybody as they only have to apply their own known offset rather than having to calculate the offset difference first / using a converter. -

@bekopharm @Johann150 @RyunoKi Attacks on PyPI (the one I know best) and the others based on the fact that anybody can upload a new package have already happened and will keep happening.
With npn it happens more often because of the higher visibility, of the culture of tiny libraries that multiplies the attack surface by a few orders of magnitude and other social factors. -

books are useful, but before the internet was as easily available as today I've wasted a lot of money on books that were supposed to teach some craft, but were much less useful than what I later found on random websites. -

@stemid ansible was installed systemwide, and sometimes there is a need to install a more recent version than the one in debian stable to be able to use their features.
Also, fixing versions in requirements.txt is pretty bad from a security point of view and is better avoided.
Anyway, if the authors of a library recommend not to use that library, I tend to read that as a strong hint that things will break in horribly to debug ways, and stay. away. from. it. -

@astraluma @SuricrasiaOnline There are projects like the freedombox that aren't managed (as in: there isn't a person to call if something goes wrong), but try to make it as easy as possible to host things, and they run on pretty cheap hardware.
Freedombox is also available pre-installed, and while not extremely cheap it's in a range that is reasonably so for a middle-class (lol) household in the rich part of the world.
