I dunno, maybe. I just remember when Diaspora ended up putting a huge amount of effort into it, and the experience just kind of sucked all around. Though, a lot of that hinges more on how it was implemented, rather than the technology itself.

Literally no other reason than “it’d be neat”. There’s zero reason for it to exist, beyond personal interest in seeing what could be done with it.

I like Element a fair bit, and I like the idea of being able to point the client at a fediverse instance and just automatically get chat functionality for free.

I know a handful of people that kind of dislike Matrix for one reason or another (mostly complexity? default homeserver is kind of shitty? weird slight of hand with E2E encryption?) but it’d be kind of neat to figure out how to integrate homeserver capabilities into a fediverse platform, for chat purposes.

Every repo I find of a #Matrix homeserver implementation in #Elixir is like 10 to 25 commits before the repo owner just throws up their hands and abandons it.

@clacke Oh, I see. I was under the impression the link you were pointing to was a PeerTube instance itself. 🤔

If it was hosted on its own instance, any instance that followed it would add records from its video catalogue with the metadata into the following instance’s own database, allowing that media to show up in search and be streamed easily.

But, if there’s no instance to follow… It might be possible to write a bot that hooks into the PeerTube API, and points new video entries in the catalogue to existing file URLs, but it’s probably not super optimized for how PeerTube works…

The final leg of this conversion process will involve the @documentaries account, which has approximately 55 different pieces of media associated with it.

It’ll probably take a while to get through, but once we’re done with it, our instance’s catalogue will 100% work for anybody that wants to view our stuff. This also will be a greater chance to more aggressively add Public Domain and Creative Commons media!

@ilja Hey, thanks! 😁 The downside is that it’s a super old instance, and the support for Object Storage for videos didn’t happen officially until like 4.0. This meant that everything had to be reencoded for HLS instead of WebTorrent, and a bunch of weird quirks needed to be worked through by hand.

But, it’s a good opportunity to clean stuff up, and it frees up a ton of server space.

Big milestone: everything on the @films account and all subchannels has been successfully migrated over to Object Storage for #VidCommons. This is a process that I have to go over manually, which is annoying, but the benefit is that every piece of media I go through gets reviewed.

Many of the entries were replaced with videos in higher resolution, with better metadata. Some entries got subtitles added and carefully aligned to the videos, and in the case of the John Wayne collection, custom thumbnails were to match the old movie posters.
