I dunno, maybe. I just remember when Diaspora ended up putting a huge amount of effort into it, and the experience just kind of sucked all around. Though, a lot of that hinges more on how it was implemented, rather than the technology itself.

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Monday, 07-Mar-2022 03:08:26 UTC Sean Tilley Literally no other reason than “it’d be neat”. There’s zero reason for it to exist, beyond personal interest in seeing what could be done with it.
I like Element a fair bit, and I like the idea of being able to point the client at a fediverse instance and just automatically get chat functionality for free.

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Monday, 07-Mar-2022 03:07:46 UTC Sean Tilley I know a handful of people that kind of dislike Matrix for one reason or another (mostly complexity? default homeserver is kind of shitty? weird slight of hand with E2E encryption?) but it’d be kind of neat to figure out how to integrate homeserver capabilities into a fediverse platform, for chat purposes.

I know it's not quite what you're after, but a dedicated community instance can be quite good for a demographic that wants to easily share their conference talk videos across the network. -
Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Monday, 28-Feb-2022 13:30:36 UTC Sean Tilley @clacke Oh, I see. I was under the impression the link you were pointing to was a PeerTube instance itself. 🤔
If it was hosted on its own instance, any instance that followed it would add records from its video catalogue with the metadata into the following instance’s own database, allowing that media to show up in search and be streamed easily.
But, if there’s no instance to follow… It might be possible to write a bot that hooks into the PeerTube API, and points new video entries in the catalogue to existing file URLs, but it’s probably not super optimized for how PeerTube works…

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Monday, 28-Feb-2022 11:54:13 UTC Sean Tilley @clacke it's possible for an instance admin to follow another instance. This effectively pools all of the Public videos for the followed instance into the index of the Follower instance.
4.1.0 also provides a search filter that can show you videos from a specific instance. -
Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Saturday, 26-Feb-2022 08:06:47 UTC Sean Tilley The final leg of this conversion process will involve the @documentaries account, which has approximately 55 different pieces of media associated with it.
It’ll probably take a while to get through, but once we’re done with it, our instance’s catalogue will 100% work for anybody that wants to view our stuff. This also will be a greater chance to more aggressively add Public Domain and Creative Commons media!

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Saturday, 26-Feb-2022 08:06:46 UTC Sean Tilley @ilja Hey, thanks! 😁 The downside is that it’s a super old instance, and the support for Object Storage for videos didn’t happen officially until like 4.0. This meant that everything had to be reencoded for HLS instead of WebTorrent, and a bunch of weird quirks needed to be worked through by hand.
But, it’s a good opportunity to clean stuff up, and it frees up a ton of server space.

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Saturday, 26-Feb-2022 08:03:52 UTC Sean Tilley Big milestone: everything on the @films account and all subchannels has been successfully migrated over to Object Storage for #VidCommons. This is a process that I have to go over manually, which is annoying, but the benefit is that every piece of media I go through gets reviewed.
Many of the entries were replaced with videos in higher resolution, with better metadata. Some entries got subtitles added and carefully aligned to the videos, and in the case of the John Wayne collection, custom thumbnails were to match the old movie posters.

Wired: Gab and Gettr and a bunch of other shitty right-wing social networks are all going to fight each other in a graceless race-to-the-bottom.
Inspired: If TS federates (unlikely), literally all of the Free Speech instances are going to troll the shit out of them.

I'm trying to keep things lowkey - she's not really on social media except for esoteric, lighthearted stuff on Tumblr (fandoms, funny pieces of writing, scifi, writing prompts). I'm just trying to figure out which instance-space would be a good starting point for her? :thaenkin: -
Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Tuesday, 18-Jan-2022 04:34:07 UTC Sean Tilley @Nyla_Smokeyface I actually don't have a problem with doing that. Some people want to get their stuff out to the greatest number of audiences, and I have no disrespect for people who take this approach. I even do that sometimes.
It's just that I think something that could give PeerTube a lot of staying power is exclusive creators and videos, and that an active community of people making videos in this space would be a big step towards making the video part of the fediverse healthy and active. -

Sean Tilley (sean@social.deadsuperhero.com)'s status on Monday, 10-Jan-2022 22:18:16 UTC Sean Tilley @am It's honestly an effort nearly a decade in the making. Interop goes back all the way to the early days of Friendica reverse-engineering the Diaspora protocol and simultaneously using OStatus to talk to StatusNet. Making all the different projects federate has been an ongoing goal for many projects who realized that it would take far more than just their own platform to get the job done.
Luckily, Mastodon's success has led to an explosive adoption of ActivityPub, and we've mostly resolved the rough bits to the point that most platforms just work with each other, from the perspective of the user.
