@am It's honestly an effort nearly a decade in the making. Interop goes back all the way to the early days of Friendica reverse-engineering the Diaspora protocol and simultaneously using OStatus to talk to StatusNet. Making all the different projects federate has been an ongoing goal for many projects who realized that it would take far more than just their own platform to get the job done.
Luckily, Mastodon's success has led to an explosive adoption of ActivityPub, and we've mostly resolved the rough bits to the point that most platforms just work with each other, from the perspective of the user.

honestly it's cool that the fediverse works as well as it does for something that "emerged" across different projects reacting to sudden, immense network effect amongst one of them
