He's exactly the right age to have internalized some pretty toxic views, and he's also kind enough to wish happiness to everyone (who isn't an asshole). Which makes it particularly interesting, in a tragic sort of way, how he struggles to explain some more modern points of view because they violate some of his views whilst simultaneously speaking to his kindness.

A vision of a borderless world is one such thing, however utopic it may seem right now.

You know, that topic has me torn a little. As far as I am concerned, that's a different symbol. I do agree with @GustavinoBevilacqua that we should call the Nazi one a Hakenkreuz to be precise.

But on the other hand, I'm about as confused between the Hakenkreuz and a regular swastika as I am between a Christian cross and its upside-down version. I'm pretty sure most Christians, once they get past their spluttering, would be able to tell the difference.

@zdl I can imagine. I do take a second or two to process the regular swastika before moving on. But growing up in Germany also conditions you quite strongly in some ways.

When the EU opened its borders in 1995, I was just old enough to hop on rides into the Netherlands by myself, and by the time I was driving, I'd almost forgotten what it was like to have checks. Effectively, I grew up as a EU citizen at more or less the exact point in time that mattered.

I don't really comprehend not wanting more of that.

My dad is going to be 80 this year, and was visiting last week. We had a bit of a discussion about this; to him, borders feel a lot more natural.

@alan Scrum is generally better for production than for research. But research also needs to be managed, and doing that usually means defining the task goal as having answered a question or three.

And if time runs out, you still have partial answers that allow you to define the next question better, etc.

@loke As much as I detest web development, I have to agree in one aspect: I don't know any other modern environment that lets you produce (layout, styling, animation,...) so much with so little (software, knowledge, structure,...)

It's the ideal environment to start self-teaching in.

Unfortunately, that means there's also a lot of really low quality stuff there, made by people at the beginning of their learning curve.

Might be because it's a Latin language I actually understand, but the songs in Encanto (daughter's current favourite) kick butt in Italian in a way they don't grab me in English.

@alcinnz Moxie is a bit of a client server proponent and will find arguments for centralization that need not be true, they're just true if you assume some things don't change. Which they won't if you don't work on them. Kinda bites itself in the tail here, which makes it a convenient position because it's hard to disprove.
