@clacke "everything I know about Orions I learned from holonovels, and bad ones too, the ones with boobs on the cover" gets a good chuckle from me every time.
@clacke technically there's one, but you're not going to get a handful of conservative dems on board so you *need* a bigger majority. It's not as if they're not pressuring Manchin et al. same as when Obama briefly had a majority: there were like 4 senators who publicly stated they'd vote against it and it seemed rather safe at the time so no one pushed it. Either way, it comes down to not having a big enough majority in the senate, then no one shows up to vote in the midterms.
@clacke it's obvious now that they should have done it earlier, but no one at the time could have reasonably expected the system could fall apart to this degree and become so one sided that even if democrats technically have a majority they wouldn't be able to pass anything for decades. Anyways, obviously I agree they should codify it, but blaming them for not doing it when they never stood any chance (and actually have tried anyways multiple times) seems wrong.
@clacke Correction: I said 6 years off the top of my head but the house passed a national right to abortion as recently as last year after the Texas thing.
@clacke no one would gave thought to codify a right that the supreme court had ruled on until recently though. If you'd tried to do this any time in the last 50 years you'd have democrats in conservative states in a really bad spot electorally and right now they just don't have the votes since their "majority" is effectively 48. Also, the house did vote on it like 6 years ago, but they haven't controlled the senate by a large enough margin for it to go further.
@clacke (but yah, strong agree that the whole point of the supreme court is to ignore public opinion and protect minority positions⦠just because this supreme court is entirely broken and doing stupid things doesn't mean we should lose sight of that)
@petrichor I don't know what features Google Forms has or what the overlap is, but https://mayfirst.coop (US/Mexico based) has a NextCloud instance which has a forms feature, https://disroot.org/ also offers it (EU based).
@jollyrogue@aadil Not to mention the privilege inherent in that sort of cynicism. If we all say "well, it doesn't matter, Chrome won" and switch, then Firefox goes under I might not notice a few thousand more trackers, you might not notice a few thousand more trackers, but the person who gets arrested after some far right group buys data about everyone who searches "underground abortion clinic" in Texas will notice. Support Firefox so others can be a tiny bit safer.
@jollyrogue@aadil I don't disagree, Mozilla isn't great, and if there were some good community alternative we might consider switching. The original post was about people switching to Chrome though, or at least, that's how I understood it. Not switching to some other alternative maintained by a better entity.
@clacke@cstanhope (at least to start I suspect we want to find a fiscal host and avoid incorporating ourselves, just to make it easy; once we have it up and running and some money in the bank, then we could start talking about incorporating. But that's just my thoughts, obviously it's not up to me alone :) )
@clacke (it's pretty bad actually; I just don't know anything else that's not run by one of the big tech companies or specifically geared towards tech-y types; FWIW it's not a VC thing as far as I know, just one person who made a thing and now sells it. More small business than giant company, but I'm not 100% sure)
@cstanhope@clacke Yes! We've got an initial test instance up at a temporary domain, but it's been a bit quiet lately and we haven't been able to get a meeting to decide on actually launching or buy a proper domain or anything. https://mesh.coop/ You'd be welcome to join our mailing list if you're interested in helping us get started: https://groups.io/g/codeforge/topics
@cstanhope@clacke I had forgotten about that; never actually got past the first episode. The original website seems to be down, do you happen to have a link to the original torrents? I don't seem to be able to find anything that's not a re-package anywhere.
