    @coyote I think it is worth adding that many of those things are only visible if the admin goes into the database (or file system). There are occasional rumors that employees of the big centralized networks are reading people's "private" posts & messages (and potentially misusing that information), but in the Fediverse, it can only happen if the admin intentionally looks through the database.

    As most of them have other things to do (jobs, family, etc), I expect it doesn't happen much.

    @ajroach42 I've actually been thinking about that in terms of some of the machines I wanted to buy in the early 1980s, but was too broke to afford. The truth is, I don't have a clue what I would use it for, or whether I would use it at all. This is probably a clue that I'm not ready to buy a retro computer.

    @clacke @FirstProgenitor In parts of New York City, there is no appointment needed. Go to a sidewalk testing booth, and wait. I don't know about anywhere else in the US, but when I've needed a test, it has been incredibly convenient.

    @simsa03 You're probably right. But then they should at least put this info in their site's docs, so that more experienced users can point to them. There should never be a situation where a user files a copyright complaint at an instance's hosting company because they accidentally discovered that their (public) posts also go to other instances. Nor should the instance admin fail to explain it if the user comes to them.

    1. Every one of your users' contacts has a remote profile on your instance.

    2. Every one of your users have remote profiles on all of their contacts' instances.

    3. If your users do not know this, it is up to you to explain it if/when they discover one of these remote profiles.

    @CarlCravens @gamehawk Being born before 1964, I remember when some people in my generation thought we would fix all the previous generations' messes. By the time the tail end graduated high school, I think that had pretty much evaporated.

    (Side note: Not since at least World War I has there been a 16-25 year slice where people are alike enough that the ssme label describes the groups as a whole. Generationalism is as false as other isms.)
