Updates should be appearing in various app stores. -
LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Saturday, 30-May-2020 16:28:52 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} #Riot (Riot-Android) recently introduced an issue where “favorite” rooms disappeared from the favorites list each time the program starts. There is a new version now, but so far, “install failed” on both of the devices I attempted to update.
This is yet another hurdle that #Matrix has to get over. Besides all the problems people are noting with the server implementation (Synapse), the clients seem to be low quality.
I no longer have any contacts where we can 1:1 over Matrix. They’ve all been driven off by bugs 🐛 ... in particular, the end-to-end encryption gave lots of “unable to decrypt this message”. I’m told that has ended, but there’s no one to test it with.
I currently use Matrix mostly for the bridges to #IRC. -

For example, addressing. Let’s say I set up #Synapse at matrix\.federati\.net. The “#members” room would be at #members:matrix.federati.net, correct? And my account would be @lnxw48a1:matrix.federati.net? I’m not even sure. Do their URLs start with “matrix:”? Or maybe “matrix://“?
And that’s the problem. They intentionally chose something so alien-looking that it confuses people. -

And then you have this message can't be read because they haven't sent keys, which chases people off pretty quickly. #Riot is not ready for recommending. -
LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} (lnxw48a1@nu.federati.net)'s status on Sunday, 14-Jul-2019 17:29:23 UTC LinuxWalt (@lnxw48a1) {3EB165E0-5BB1-45D2-9E7D-93B31821F864} Wow. Another thing disappointing about #Matrix, or at least the #Riot client. Someone posted video of some guy pushing his schlong through some device attached to a chair back. There’s no mechanism for hiding or blocking that video. The homeserver admin or the room’s admin could remove the post, of course, but why must individual users have to wait for some higher-up to decide whether they see particular content? That power belongs first and foremost to the user. -
F-Droid (fdroidorg@mastodon.technology)'s status on Thursday, 02-May-2019 19:36:17 UTC F-Droid If you are using #riot-android you should update to version 0.8.28a as this is a critical security update.
If you are a user of the matrix.org homeserver and have received an alert message stating that you should update to a version 0.8.99 from google play you can safely ignore that. This message was only targeted at google play users but accidentally sent to some #F-Droid users as well.

If they released a better replacement for #Synapse tomorrow, Riot would still constrain most #Matrix use to a certain subset of techpeeps. -

It was just the lack of active users that caused me to close the account.
#Riot (or perhaps #Synapse; somewhere in the #Matrix ecosystem) is still too alpha to be recommendable. It is obvious that both of them are inspired by something else that I have not seen or used ( Possibly #Slack? ) which probably does all the same things.
"Use X; it is the same thing but slightly different" doesn't seem to work very well as a way of persuading people. -

Sheogorath 🦊 (sheogorath@g0v.social)'s status on Friday, 30-Mar-2018 20:00:11 UTC Sheogorath 🦊 Decentralize your world.
There is of course #mastodon as federated social media.
There is good old #email as federated postbox (as long as not everyone uses GMail).
There is #peertube as a federated video platform.
There is #Riot / Matrix.org as federated group messaging.
There is #XMPP for federated 1on1 messaging.
And there is #nextcloud as federated cloud storage.
In theory most services are already federated. We only miss more users :)

Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Sunday, 02-Apr-2017 20:22:14 UTC Hallå Kitteh @meaningness The Slack alternative is #matrix ( https://matrix.org/ ), specifically, https://riot.im/app/ . It federates, and there are bridges to other services, for example I participate on #freenode through it.
@lambadalambda offers an independent #riot instance at https://matrix.heldscal.la/ . -

Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) (clackemovedtoheldscalla@quitter.se)'s status on Friday, 28-Oct-2016 12:41:54 UTC Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) @bob @bes With #riot I follow 1 Matrix and 2 IRC channels with some traffic, and 2 slightly busy IRC channels, no battery issues noticed. -
Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) (clackemovedtoheldscalla@quitter.se)'s status on Friday, 28-Oct-2016 11:49:18 UTC Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) @bes I hear #matrix has #slack integration ... But if this is a pre-existing IRC channel, should just recommend #riot instead of #slack. -

Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) (clackemovedtoheldscalla@quitter.se)'s status on Friday, 28-Oct-2016 08:15:40 UTC Claes Wallin (韋嘉誠) I agree w/ @bob, @thomask and @jarlarntzen: Should've just gone with #matrix. #riot as an IRC front-end rocks. Close to #slack usability. -
