So, anyone of you open source enthusiasts that also make commercial software that you sell? (non open source)

@estebanm @blp @ekaitzzarraga @hobbsc - thanks for the reply! so we're mostly in the same boat, my day job is not open source related, I work on open source stuff in my free time, but now for my next personal project I'm thinking about making that not open source, (3d render plugin like before, but for other applications), I want to sell it and make something back with it (at least that's the idea). I just wanted to ask because I was curious about what you all do. I do value open source, but I also value money, it's really really (impossible mostly) to earn anything on the side for the type if things I do if it's open source, no one ever donates or anything like that. Anyways - its a long way down the line, currently I'm working on the open source render plugin, making that feature complete, then I'll think a bit more and decide when that one is mostly done.

@hobbsc @blp @bob @ekaitzzarraga @benediktg , one thing I saw for I2P for android was a free edition, and a 'donate' edition. That made me buy it because I knew I would support them. If they just had a 'donate' button I would probably not donate. So I feel maybe they are on to something.
Also - many other 3d software related software have a 'learning' edition (free for non commercial use), and then the full 'regular' package. that might also be a option. The learning\free edition can then have some limitation to it (typically render output size etc).
http://sidefx.com did this with their advanced 3D software, and people love it.
Those who want to play around with it and learn can do that, and once they get serious about it they shell out the cash to get the full package.
Other render software for 3d has mostly a subscription plan, I'm not sure if I'll go that route, but I'm open for it, as well as letting them buy it for a one time fee,

@bob @blp @benediktg @hobbsc @ekaitzzarraga The difference in that and what I'm doing is that I'm not making 3d models, I'm just integrating the renderer use for software X.
But yes - many people earn money by making 3d models (especially for unity \ unreal engine), but that's not what I want to do. But the idea itself is great, and many people do that. People (or companies) are willing to pay a lot for 3d models, especially if the cost of 3d model is lower then what it would cost 'you' to make it yourself.

@maiyannah I've also worked with 3d related software that lets you buy source code access, you have to 'keep it to your self' but at least then you can take that and build on it for your own in-house implementations.
I've also thought of what you mention at the end there, and you are right that many of the big companies has this type of license \ model.
That's something to think more about.

@ekaitzzarraga @blp @hobbsc @estebanm sure, I'm on xmpp too, stigatle@cryptolab.net feel free to add me there (I'm not sure if I have you there already). That's for you others as well, feel free to add!

@gargron @blp @hobbsc @ekaitzzarraga @estebanm Yeah, patreon is a good thing, I've seen a lot of people release their stuff there. You also have https://gumroad.com/ , but thats more like a store. I'm keeping my options open, and patreon feels like a much better option then a 'paypal donate' button for sure.

@hobbsc the @@nick issuse has been fixed in the Qvitter code for quite a while. It will go away with your instance's next update. @gargron
