We've actually released two features today that I'm really excited about. One is, as you may already know, displaying the author's fediverse account underneath link previews. But the other is showing a profile preview when you hover a user anywhere in the web app, with a quick follow shortcut.
Oh, today is my 8th anniversary of working on Mastodon. I was 23 when I started, finishing my last year of university, still living at my parent's place. I had no idea what I was getting myself into or that it would consume the next 8 years of my life almost completely.
For those using the mastodon.social web app, there's been an update to one of #Mastodon's core features, the compose form! Been working on it since end of November last year, so really excited to finally bring it to light. More is to come. Let me know how you like it!
Make no mistake, this is huge for Mastodon. Currently people have to choose between X, Mastodon, and Threads, and network effects play a dominant role in that choice. If we can say, you can access all the folks that went to Threads from a Mastodon account, that makes it a far more attractive option given all of its other perks π
#Threads is testing federation for a few selected profiles. I'm now following @mosseri! It's one-way for now, but it's exciting. It's a step towards the interoperable social web that we've been advocating for π
If you'd like your (public) posts to appear in search results on Mastodon, remember that you need to opt-in. Edit Profile β Privacy and Reach β Include public posts in search results. 14K people have opted-in so far!
The search interface has been updated againβyou've now got infinite scroll on search results. Want to search for something you've already bookmarked? Add in:library to your search query.
You can now search for a bunch more stuff on mastodon.social! If you're on web, the popout on the search bar will tell you. Designing this stuff to work properly was pretty fun!
@IzzyOnDroid@dukethereal@yesfreenet It's massive value to have their official accounts on an official domain. You know it's real. And it's a validation of the platform. If we want them to invest into a separate social media team to manage these accounts, we need to grow the platform further.
Feel like I'm an outlier in not caring how people pronounce my name. Any variant of the same root will do. I've been Eugen, Eugene, ΠΠ²Π³Π΅Π½ΠΈΠΉ, ΠΠ΅Π½Ρ, Eugenio (jokingly), EugΓ¨ne...
One of the top frustrating things about having a growing audience is that you can not rely on any shared or historic knowledge. Everything has to be said with the assumption that the reader has not seen a single other word from you and knows nothing about you. Every thought or announcement has to inline all the fundamentals.
Just realized "Get started" and "Sign in" on the first screen of the iOS app got translated into "First steps" and "Sign up" in German which explains why I've been getting complaints that there's no way to sign in to an existing account π€¦βοΈ
I was just answering a question that multiple new people asked me, it's not like I *just* made the decision. Didn't expect this toot to blow up of all things haha. This has been my position since that feature was requested for the first time more than a year ago
