Support with proprietary is with often very costy contracts, it doesn't comes with the basic price.
Support with FOSS isn't great but worst case you can ask another unrelated dev if they can help you, this is nearly impossible to have with proprietary software. -

Reminds me that I have a ton of stuff in SHI(F)T-JIS and Latin-1 and some software choke on that, it's part of the things that I should fix in my collections… -

Usually because well, C mindset and it's nice for things like checking (mostly) text-based magic numbers. -

Except this stance is very old.
BSD freed a lot of Unix code in ~1995.
OpenSolaris freed basically all the rest in 2008~2010
It is now 2022. -
Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: (lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me)'s status on Tuesday, 29-Mar-2022 02:24:15 UTC Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: @alcinnz Yeah, because yes(1) is just for repeating a line over and over as an answer to a program, which I can entirely see misbehaving with large writes being sent to it.
If you need to write a bunch of stuff in a block device or similar just cp /dev/zero /dev/dest (yup, dd is also useless in 99% of cases)
Specially as their buffer is 8192 bytes rather than 4096.And even with that, just filling a long buffer and calling write(2) on it shouldn’t have ended up being that complex.

Reading Unix or Plan9 code is quite refreshing in it's obvious simplicity, even with the old or weird dialects of C.
Reading GNU code often feels like reading some a slightly cleaned up IOCCC contestant software. -

The Unix useless machine.
