Much of complexity in software is a result of people trying to solve a hypothetical problem they think they'll have. My experience is that it's always best to write the simplest code that adequately solves the problem you actually have.
@groovestomp haha yeah I find a lot of senior engineers like to build Rube Goldberg machines. My pet theory is that it's just a way for people to keep things interesting when solving boring problems. :)
The problem with using puzzles in coding interviews is that you end up selecting for people who like puzzles and that's how your production code will inevitably be written.
@skells@koherecoWatchdog@peter ah yes, being minimally informed on the subject I'm discussing means I'm a paid shill. I truly feel sorry for you bud. It's harsh being a victim of propaganda.
@yisraeldov clearly it's not as we've discovered that cooperative positive sum relationships tend to work better than zero sum ones. So, at least some humans are able to understand that you can do better than Darwinian selection.
Capitalist enterprises should be treated the same way as wild animals. No matter how nice they might appear they will still try to eat you if they think they can get away with it.
@roadriverrail well yeah, but the fact that even conservatives understand the risks of a nuclear war is probably a good thing in the grand scheme of things.
It does paint an easy to understand picture of how quickly things could escalate.
@clacke@sampo@ic3l9 my impression was that Russia was getting everything it wanted without having to lift a finger.
I simply didn't see them starting a costly invasion which will completely tank their relations with the west. And US has been crying wolf that Russia was about to attack for a long time without providing a shred of evidence to support that.
@AgreeableLandscape yeah, I think it's interesting to consider how China allowed HK protests to go on for over a year until national security law was enacted. Meanwhile, Canada cracked down as soon as the bridge to US got blocked.
Really shows what country respects people's right to protest more.
