feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Sunday, 10-Jul-2022 16:31:25 UTC feld It's so much faster for me 99% of the time and I hate the way the employees bag your groceries -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Sunday, 10-Jul-2022 02:30:59 UTC feld Software developers seem to be more inclined to write a blog about it anyway -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jun-2022 12:39:50 UTC feld I don't know this for a fact but I know it's true -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jun-2022 12:34:18 UTC feld Don't drag IRC into this. We used to have publicly searchable logs for all open source project IRC channels. -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Sunday, 12-Jun-2022 12:34:17 UTC feld I guess the channels you hung out in were run by idiots then because we always had bots logging and publishing for search engines to index... so we didn't have to repeat answers to questions -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Tuesday, 31-May-2022 16:09:07 UTC feld Maintaining what is there is not as big of a deal, but it's definitely getting more expensive.
Now draw the rail corridors on the USA and tell me who you are taking that land from and how you're going to pay for it. And for those that refuse to sell -- how you're going to take it from them (imminent domain?) and not have the project delayed by court cases for years and years and years ... -

well that's a blatant lie -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Tuesday, 10-May-2022 02:34:16 UTC feld You're asking for the equivalent drop-of-the-hat convenience of owning your own car without owning your own car. And they would just make the TSA for the fast rail just as bad. 🥹🥹🥹 -

Uncomfortable position is a thing, but also just the wrong pressure in the wrong spot can literally feel like someone has punched you right in the balls full force. But it goes away immediately when you reposition. I literally never think about it.
I've heard in rare cases people can end up with severe frequent pain which would be awful, but AIUI the risk is very low for that. -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 20-Apr-2022 17:13:03 UTC feld The house I grew up in still had gas pipes in all the rooms for gas light fixtures from before electricity was installed. We ripped them out during remodeling. -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Wednesday, 06-Apr-2022 14:38:03 UTC feld We are at the point now where modern warfare enables us to pick up the cellphone of a dead enemy combatant and call their girlfriend to laugh at them and tell them their boyfriend is dead -

feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Thursday, 24-Feb-2022 04:32:39 UTC feld Don't forget that our Large Power Transformers are a major weakness. And they can't be replaced. They're custom made in Germany by Siemens to the exact size/specs of the load and cost millions and take 3 years to manufacture last I checked
There's a DOE paper showing how many we have that are near EoL and there's no plan to replace them before they fail.
We had one blow up in Madison a couple years ago. So now we're down to one at the generating facility downtown. Last I checked it still wasn't replaced. -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Thursday, 24-Feb-2022 04:32:06 UTC feld Because movies make us scared of nukes and the general public doesn't know what an EMP would do -
feld (feld@bikeshed.party)'s status on Thursday, 24-Feb-2022 04:31:04 UTC feld You could probably cripple the country by breaking a large part of the American internet and leave major city like Chicago without power with only two or three strategically placed EMPs
The chaos would be awful
And then go cut fiber at the edges of other large cities -- easy to do as it's obvious where the hand holes are along the interstate highways and they're not secured
American comms blacked out, at least one third of the US grid unstable ...
