For the newbies. Ugh, well, what to say? I'm a Free Software hacker. I use a mechanical keyboard and trackball and I am an Arch/Parabola user. In a former incarnation I mostly did industrial robotics and computer vision, but now I'm mostly interested in self-hosting and things pertaining to running communications systems.
I've always been interested in self-organizing systems and emergent processes. Systems which try to survive. This is the commonality across the various things I've done.

It's not quite as bad as complaining about the name of the project (insert crying baby gif), but it's not far elevated above that level.

He mentions that the system is distributed, but obviously hasn't grokked what that actually means.
Servers have user accounts. I know, shocking, isn't it? Same applies for email, xmpp, forums and just about any other service located on a server. They're not all magically synchronized by some universally agreed protocol. Nor would it be reasonable for them to be.
If you want a pre-internet analogy, there could be Bob living in Manchester and Bob living in Glasgow, and they might be different Bobs!
Scandalized? I thought you would be. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Thursday, 13-Apr-2017 12:46:05 UTC Bob Mottram Just in case there are any new Mastodon instance admins out there reading this, the number one thing you need to have in place if you want any sustained presence on the open web is a backup system in place and tested. This was one of the things I found early on with the !Freedombone project. If you don't have backups, or only an untested system, then any database corruption, failed hard drive or whatever can delete your entire user community overnight. I think that happened to at least one gnusocial server after the 2016 Twitter exodus.
Freedombone uses Obnam to do encrypted backups with a gpg key, but there are various other options available. -

The surveillance state with its deluded capitalistic hangers-on and scapegoating apologists should come under withering and sustained criticism. -

Maybe a Patreon would cover it, or maybe it won't. And then there's always the temptation to start selling user data, inserting ads, etc, etc. Before you know it, you're Twitter 2.0. -
Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Saturday, 01-Apr-2017 12:59:48 UTC Bob Mottram Trump signs executive order, officially ending Capitalism
In Washington DC today president Donald J Trump added his signature to an executive order officially announcing the end of Capitalism in the US. "It had a good run", Mr Trump remarked cheerfully as he set pen to paper, "and as a nation we gave it our best shot, but it's now clear that Capitalism can no longer deliver the jobs our people so urgently need".
In a formal gathering of state officials representing a rare consensus of opinion across partisan divides, the president delivered a speech announcing the transition plan for his administration.
"I've called you here today to announce what my administration intends to do and to set out a plan for transition to a new economic system fit for our times. Before this decade is out all US companies will transition to becoming worker owned cooperatives and all assets or shares will be distributed among the new owners. Wall street and The Fed will be liquidated and any assets they possessed by them will be used to help smooth over the transition period. Just as the Soviet Union eventually came to an end after a long period of stagnation so too must we recognize that one chapter of history is over and another is about to begin. At last we will drain the swamp and the destiny of America will be taken back where it first began and where it always truly belonged - with the we the people." -

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Sunday, 26-Mar-2017 10:57:45 UTC Bob Mottram @strypey just replace the "crony" capitalism with "real" capitalism [yawn]. Big governments are to blame [yawn]. Hyperinflation! [snooze] Fiat! [doze] Founding fathers! [snore] Immorality everywhere! [yawn]
This sounds like the familiar criticisms from the right. That there are good and bad capitalists, and that the bad ones took over. The good capitalists should be "rewarded with profits" and the bad ones should be banished. Don't mention whose profits or where they came from.
I don't doubt that governments are evil, but there are all kinds of problems with the narrative of the right. Why is gold some kind of fetish. They say creating money is bad, but all money is created somehow by someone. Are people with savings more virtuous than those without? If money is just a proxy for labour power isn't holding other people's labour to ransom immoral? All this obsession with "founding fathers" seems ridiculous. Even cursory historical analysis shows they were no saints. -

Bob Mottram (bob@social.freedombone.net)'s status on Friday, 24-Mar-2017 21:54:34 UTC Bob Mottram @lambadalambda Thing is, the state backs up with violence a lot of the supposedly "free trade" and "free contract" stuff which the Capitalists like to go on about. Without a state doing their dirty work the rich would have a much harder time living on their unearned income. -
