I started on !Freedombone at the end of 2013, although I had been running a server on a Sheevaplug since 2010. In 2013 I had started a new job in Manchester and had run out of steam on robotics projects so was looking for something new. The Snowden story was in the news a lot and so I though I would try to add more security to the server and either start running FreedomBox on it or do something similar. I checked the status of FreedomBox but it seemed to be effectively an abandoned project, so there was really only one choice: do something like FreedomBox but on newer open source hardware which was the Beaglebone Black. -

@xj9 @hobbsc I expect that anyone making decisions about web standards is heavily lobbied to do this kind of stuff. If everyone around you is saying that DRM is ok, that is "protects content creators" or whatever then it would be easy to go along with that. -

Getting NextCloud running on !Freedombone. Compared to some other installs this is quite straightforward, but the performance of NextCloud seems sluggish and that might just be down to bloat. -

@maiyannah @dahabakuk I don't think it's so much about the displaced workers as about the resources produced with automation. Who gets the produce, under what conditions? Who decides what to produce? Are the automation systems managed as a commons, or something else? Does everyone get a share stake in the automation, and so on. -

I usually license under GPL, unless there's some compelling reason to do otherwise. GPL is active defense of the commons, whereas others are merely laissez faire. -

@xj9 @datapup Hitler and Stalin killed a lot of people. They were both authoritarians. The soviet union wasn't really communist, or rather, the initial soviets were quickly banned and replaced by a central committee under what Lenin called "state capitalism".
If there is to be any sane future in which humanity doesn't self-destruct then authoritarian methods will need to be abandoned and replaced with a system where there is a more even balance of power and it's not concentrated into the hands of a few bad individuals. -
