@beardyunixer In this case connecting to the mesh only requires being within wifi proximity of another peer. There are existing community mesh networks like Freifunk and Pittmesh, but those are fundamentally about connecting to the internet. The Freedombone mesh isn't about that. It doesn't care if the internet exists or not and is just for communications within a local area.
There have been tests and demos but as far as I know this particular system isn't being used on any scale anywhere.
"Winner, who was working for the defense contractor Pluribus International Corporation, printed an NSA document detailing how Russia had hacked a voting equipment vendor in Florida and was trying to breach local election systems right up until the days before November’s vote"https://social.freedombone.net/attachment/29539
"to support awareness and preventative activity to counter internet harms"
Internet harms, dude.
I expect these harms will include things like disability protest groups, anyone criticizing the monarchy, "Trotskyites" and anarchists, unemployment or refugee support groups, union organisers, or people who criticize centralized government identity schemes.
"Some people say that it is not for government to regulate when it comes to technology and the internet. We disagree."
I don't expect this is going to go down well either.
"we will establish a regulatory framework in law to underpin our digital charter and to ensure that digital companies, social media platforms and content providers abide by these principles. We will introduce a sanctions regime to ensure compliance"
These folks LOVE sanctioning people. They really get off on it.
"We will also create a power in law for government to introduce an industry-wide levy from social media companies"
