What's the business model? Who's paying the bills?

karlI just went from being 99% sure my next PC isn't a mac to 100% sure. OSX 10.12 doesn't allow users to run unapproved programs unless you do some command-line stuff to enable running unsigned programs. I'm not afraid of the command line, but I *really* don't like the mentality behind this decision. And the fucking Apple fanboys are eagerly metaphorically fellating Apple for this user-hostile decision because it "keeps people safe!"
Fucking hell, I have no idea what I'm going to do a few years down the road. Every last photo editor on Linux is totally inadequate to my needs. (And believe me, I've tried them ALL.) Windows 10 is unacceptable for more reasons than I can count, and I have no faith that my squirreled-away retail copy of Win 8.1 will work on hardware years from now. And Mac OS is going down the road to full-scale "open your wallet and do as Apple commands, you stupid user" IOSification.
Just so tired and angry at the whole mess right now. Hell, I may go back to a fucking darkroom and 35mm. Maybe the luddites are on to something here.
Not yet, but any decade now GIMP will have support for 16-bit colourspaces. And if development continues at its breakneck pace, we'll have adjustment layers before the turn of the century!
I'm really curious to find out what really happened. Given RMS&co's generally socially-progressive attitudes, I'd be quite surprised if he or one of the other senior FSF people would actually fire anyone for simply being trans. More facts are needed.
Colin "I Helped Fabricate Evidence To Stage Invasions" Powell wants to lecture people on decency?
Trump's a psychotic xenophobic grade-A fucktard that I hope never holds public office more prominent than county rat-catcher, but it's not like neocon-insider-extrordinaire Colin fucking Powell has any business judging what is and is not a disgrace.
Short version: only webcams that encode using YUY2 will work with the anniversary edition. Anything that uses MJPEG or H264 won't. Microsoft claims it's for performance reasons.
Fun fact: YUY2 was developed internally at Microsoft.
End result: Are you a company that wants to make a webcam that works with Windows 10? Time to pony up some patent royalty cash!
Welcome to the world of monopolies and mandatory updates. #wexit

karlTried a twitter-related experiment last night. I signed up for a twitter account using one of my email domains that I've never used for twitter before (so no history of spam or abuse from that domain). I followed all the suggested celebs that it pre-checkmarked for me in the signup process. Basically I did the twitter signup equivalent of "next next next install".
And then I did absolutely nothing. No DMs, no tweets, no updates to the profile. And I left it overnight.
@thecharmingalbino Ah, good old-fashioned electric-universe quackery. I was wondering when I'd see one of you pseudoscience cranks showing up.
Thankfully, your brand of insanity is relatively harmless. You're not actively harming society like the anti-vaccination assholes. Shine on, you crazy diamonds.
I love how low-tech Canadian voting is. Paper, pencil, a literal ballot box, and a whole lot of eyes on each physical ballot as they're counted. I don't care if it costs more and takes more time. It's a safer process.
@wakarimasen @bobjonkman Way ahead of you. :) Every encrypted drive I have has a backup of the headers and keyfiles for all the other encrypted drives.
@bobjonkman @wakarimasen Yeah, periodic verification is key. And having both offsite and onsite backups is also vital. My onsite backups are on drives with luks/dm-crypt'd full-disk encryption, I consider that safe enough. I use Duplicity for the "backups of the backups" that are going offsite.
I used to use owncloud's encrypted storage, until I looked deeper into it and realized how PANTS ON HEAD RETARDED it is. The encryption may be fine (I have no idea, I'm no cryptographer) but they don't obfuscate filenames.
"La dee da, I'm a bad guy who's got a folder full of encrypted files from someone's owncloud install, let's see, there's a little file called passwords.txt, gee, I wonder what file I'm gonna aim my password cracker at first?"
@clacke @ericxdu23 I've never bought that excuse by messenger-app makers. They could just as easily use an email address as an ID instead of a phone number. It's not a new concept.
The only reasons to choose phone numbers over email addresses is to track real-world identities and limit people to one account. Combining those two aspects is a data-miner's dream. Why do you think so many web-based services are trying as hard as they can to get users to supply their phone numbers?
@ericxdu23 It's not so much about authentication, as it is about needlessly collecting highly-unique personal data. Combine one's phone number with one's network of contacts, and traffic analysis becomes trivial no matter how good the encryption is.
Given that Signal, Whatsapp, Telegram, and all the rest never actually use the phone network (except for a one-time account setup authentication), there's no technical reason for requiring a phone number. All those services run entirely over data networks after account creation. Collecting phone numbers is entirely about connecting social graphs to real-world identities, for the purposes of law enforcement and advertising data mining.

karlWow. Owarimonogatari is one of the most brutal arcs of the whole Monogatari series. No supernatural stuff, no fanservicey moments, no sight gags. Just pure realistic emotional gutpunches, one after the other. In a series filled with broken birds, Oikura takes the fucking cake.
And the direction is stunning. Shinbo is a fucking master. Why the hell don't more anime directors take advantage of the literally infinite camera framing possibilities of animation?
