    @clacke There is effectively no authentication behind phone numbers, so that can't be the reason. Sure, making it easier for friends to find you (with telephone numbers or e-mail [style] addresses) is a big motivator, but I think @karl is mostly right on this. @ericxdu23

    @dragnucs The difference between desktops and servers, maybe. Silverlight, Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, various printer and scanner drivers will all throw up upgrade dialog boxes within a few minutes of someone logging in with admin rights. Some others (such as VLC, Firefox, and Mumble) wait until you launch the program before they inform you that updates need to be installed.

    Compare with a package manager, which combines all those updates into a single notification and process.

    @clacke et al More accurately, #Pump.io was created to require fewer resources than #StatusNet. Very successful at that. #Federation is there, but still requires workarounds, so I'm not sure it improved.

    Still, I'd support more #federated networks over more centralized networks. #GNUsocial, Pump, #Diaspora, #Libertree, etc
