Silverlight, Java, Flash, Adobe Reader, various printer and scanner drivers will all throw up upgrade dialog boxes within a few minutes of someone logging in with admin rights. Some others (such as VLC, Firefox, and Mumble) wait until you launch the program before they inform you that updates need to be installed.

Compare with a package manager, which combines all those updates into a single notification and process.
