Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 24-Mar-2016 20:09:27 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs I'm going to take a break from the !fediverse for a while. I'm having a bit of (anti)social media fatigue. I'm sure I'll be back at some point and I'll keep this account alive.
I'm available via email (cmhobbs@member.fsf.org), xmpp (cmhobbs@jabber.libernil.net), and Freenode (cmhobbs) if anyone has a reason for contact.
Good !tzaf, friends! -

Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Sunday, 20-Mar-2016 02:07:39 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Anyone know if it's possible to crack passwords in DejaDup? I have backups from two years ago that include probably a decade of stuff that I don't remember the password to. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Monday, 14-Mar-2016 02:12:01 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Kits my son has built over the last three weeks: top left is a solder training kit with blinky lights. Top right is a 'hypnotic' flashing light bar with adjustable frequency. White box is an AM radio. https://loadaverage.org/attachment/2958315 -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Sunday, 13-Mar-2016 23:36:21 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Building an AM radio with my son and I came across this little wonder. It's a high gain radio frequency amplifier, an active detector, and automatic gain, all jammed into a TO-92 package. It's a TA7642 AM Radio IC. https://loadaverage.org/attachment/2958150 -

Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Mar-2016 18:49:04 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Yeah, I'm torn about the issue. I'm more upset than I thought I would be. I like that computers could come up with moves unbound by human sentiments and that we could have strong computer analysis but I'm a fan of Lee and I also don't want Google to add this to their resume just because they bought an AI company and slapped their name on it. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Wednesday, 09-Mar-2016 03:32:19 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs A friend (who is politically 180 degrees away from me) mentioned tonight that most of the protesters at the G20 summits and other events are paid protesters because they have iPhones and Tony Lama boots. I wasn't in the mood for arguing so I didn't question it. It was interesting to think about the concept of paid protesters though, whether or not he was right or wrong in his statement. -

Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Monday, 29-Feb-2016 02:47:52 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs I don't think the American people realize this election is a sham. The machine will put the person the machine wants in office. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Sunday, 28-Feb-2016 16:41:58 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Regarding all this talk about blocking federation by instance, that feels like it might Balkanize our small federation. Wouldn't it make more sense to have blocked users not show up in public timelines on a per user basis? Also, if I recall correctly, you can elect not to federate when you set up your instance. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Friday, 05-Feb-2016 16:22:03 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs I like my current job quite a lot but if there's one thing I've learned by leaving stable gov't work for the private sector is that this stuff never lasts. I need to constantly keep learning and prepare for whatever might come next.
I'm super elated to be not be doing any web development work anymore, with the exception of assisting a client. I think my hopes for whatever comes next are that I continue to work with Free Software and that I move into a functional language in the Common Lisp or Scheme families.
That'll be a tough niche to break into. I've got a lot of studying to do for it as well. I'm also probably going to have to go back and re-take some of the CS courses I had in college to brush up since web development has dropped my programming knowledge down to I BUILD CRUD SCREENS REAL GOOD. Luckily those things are mostly gratis and easily accessed these days. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Friday, 05-Feb-2016 01:10:10 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs I guess what I'm trying to say is call somebody. It's not productive to live with mental illness and there shouldn't be any stigma associated with it. You deserve to live your life without that sort of stress. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 04-Feb-2016 23:01:53 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs Quote from wealth part one - The commons radically oppose both the State and private property as shaped by market forces, and are powerful sources of emancipation and social justice. However, they have been buried by the dominant academic discourse grounded in scientific positivism. They need to be emancipated by an authentic shift in phenomenological perception in order to produce emancipation. -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 04-Feb-2016 19:30:36 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs I've been unable to find anarchist literature discussing fraternities or sororities (not necessarily college/"greek" ones). My guess is they'd be frowned upon due to their often hierarchical leadership.
Anyone have any thoughts or input? -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 04-Feb-2016 04:57:45 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs The source code is relatively clean, too. How does one go about making changes to an abandoned GPL'ed project? If I fork it, do I change the the copyright to use my name? -
Christopher M. Hobbs (cmhobbs@loadaverage.org)'s status on Thursday, 04-Feb-2016 02:29:30 UTC Christopher M. Hobbs @cmhobbs other than just calls and texts, I'm down to a browser, Wikipedia, forecastie, and mustard mod for internet things. Gobandroid and FBReader for occasional amusement. Then markers, hexiano, practice hub, sokoban, and pixelesque for my son. Turned off all active checking and alerts for everything but calls/texts. Going to try to put this phone away more often and just flat out ignore it. I'm also thinking about setting a tech curfew for myself. No glowing rectangles after and before some arbitrary hour. That'll be difficult as my wife runs the television pretty constantly. -
