   A five year old Reddit post just helped me solve a knotty problem.
   I hate to think how much useful info is being lost in ephemeral services like Discord, Slack, and IRC.

     @feld @Edent Nah, IRC logs are still a horrible place to find solutions to problems, even if they were well-indexed by search engines, which they're not.

     @feld mate, even the best IRC channel is inferior for knowledge sharing compared to PHPbb.

     Look, I was on IRC back in the dial-up days. It was always rubbish.

     I guess the channels you hung out in were run by idiots then because we always had bots logging and publishing for search engines to index... so we didn't have to repeat answers to questions

     Don't drag IRC into this. We used to have publicly searchable logs for all open source project IRC channels.

     @Moon @Edent honestly the love of IRC in freeze software circles is just nostalgia, IRC sucks in literally every possible way except the fact you can literally use it with netcat

     @chjara @Edent I've implemented bots for IRC, MSN Messenger (yeah a long time ago lol), Matrix, and Discord and IRC is kind of shit but easy to implement. Discord was the easiest and had the least problems. Matrix was a nightmare.

     @Edent @feld Idiots who just didn’t run an entirely parallel infrastructure to IRC? Please tone down, your particular idiosyncrasies aren’t the gold standard.
