@futurebird when I first started using Mastodon I was reposting my toots on Farcebook and my friends were all like "hey I think you've been hacked I am getting all these posts from you with links to this sketchy Columbian website called coales.co" which made me sad because it was not sketchy at all it was actually my very own little mastodon that literally lived on a smol computer in my garage so I deleted my Facebook account forever and now I am happy again

To paraphrase:
"our advertising business allows poor and cheap people to use our customers' Big Expensive Websites and this will enable us to force them to watch our ads and also make sure bots don't cheat us out of those revenue generating eyeballs"
...and...
"people want to read news that isn't fake so this will help limit the fake news that is a direct cause of the motivation our targeted-ad-based, engagement-driven business model has provided"
It is pretty transparent that Google is trying to do the equivalent of treating cancer with opioids when their primary business model is the carcinogen here.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Sunday, 10-Apr-2022 20:09:54 UTC Mark Shane Hayden @mwlucas hmm Corporate America is scared and shocked and offended to Gen Z because they don't giv a shit about pleasing their bosses and quit at the drop of a hat for the next better offer.
The nerve of them! That is how corporations are supposed to behave not good citizens!
Also as a Gen Xer old enough to be the parent of a Gen Z I must say I wouldn't consider it rebellion I would consider it doing what we really wanted to do but were *not quite* motivated enough to do it.
In the past quarter century Corporate America has only gotten shittier, so why is ANYONE the slightest bit surprised that the Children of the Slackers might just get pushed over that edge?

It is great that creative types use their creativity to work around these hostile practices but this is fostering the "cargo cult" mentality already endemic on YouTube so I really hope you can keep a good presence on the indie-web where such things aren't an issue.
Left unchecked, advertising-driven social media algorithms turn all web comics into Garfield.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Sunday, 20-Feb-2022 06:03:32 UTC Mark Shane Hayden @gedvondur @ajroach42 the previous toot was posted from a 7 year old PC to a masto instance running on a 10 year old server. It all performs just fine despite how bloated Firefox, Mastodon etc. are. It isn't a stretch to consider that if effort was put into efficiency all of this could be done with the computing power of 20 year old desktops, well within the capability of super low cost low power SBCs.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Monday, 24-Jan-2022 06:42:14 UTC Mark Shane Hayden Local-to-me vlogger Dan Olson has an outstanding, detailed skeptic's critique of web3 and NFTs that neatly encapsulatre pretty much every problem or concern I have identified myself
I have never *ever* seen any convincing answers to any of these serious issues by web3 advocates.
Distributed ledgers and computation, cryptography and so forth are fascinatiing technologies but cryptocurrencies, NFTs and web3 are just...absolutely disastrous implementations of such technologies. Every answer to a problem in this space is just a new often bigger problem.
If ya really cared...if you really meant to make the world a better place...you'd kill the whole thing with fire and start over bros.

Mark Shane Hayden (msh@coales.co)'s status on Monday, 17-Jan-2022 21:27:13 UTC Mark Shane Hayden Of course the user experience needs fine tuning since firefox insists on summoning the on screen keyboard every time a form element loads up and completely obscures the page until I dismiss it but this is a mobile typing experience I have not enjoyed since the days of the Psion and HP pocket computers.
I underestimated how much I missed proper pocket computers!
