@jim Lately I tried AndStatus on my old Nexus One, which is still alive and is used mostly for such tests. I found out that if in Settings -> Syncing I do the below, this old phone is quite responsive: 1. Turn off "Sync while using AndStatus" 2. Change "Default sync frequency" to several hours and make sure automatic syncing is on, so all hard work will be done, when you don't use the device
@roland It's interesting, did your wife or you tried to search for an answer in the AndStatus User Guide? I'm figuring out if extending it will really worth an effort.
@roland Seeing that message context menu is too long already I moved Follow/Unfollow actions to the "Users of message” list, as other pals noticed. Maybe I have to duplicate this action in the Message context menu also...
@jim Hi, last year you said that it stopped working for you after a couple of days. How long did it work properly this time? Which version did you use? You know, without your close involvement I cannot improve such things, because I personally never got in such situation for years. Device reboot was maximum that I had to do to fix some problem, years ago... Most people, naturally, are lazy to take part in the long investigation: they usually reinstall AndStatus and this cures everything.
@mararm For interaction with AndStatus GNU Social is using protocol, borrowed from Twitter many years ago, when people didn't think about putting "activity streams” into real software yet. That protocol doesn't have ”favoriting activity ” also. As we see, in order to compensate this shortage, GNUSocial developers invented a hack: a server really sends "favoriting activity” to AndStatus, but not in the machines understandable form (as modern protocols, e.g. in Pump.io, do) but as a normal post, only prepending it with words: ”User favorites something by...". I hope upcoming implementations will allow AndStatus understand user's actions correctly and clearly show you ONE post, having several "likes" by different users, and not several posts, looking suspiciously similar... @gargron ;-)
@vitnir I investigated sending Direct (Private) messages in AndStatus: they are done correctly using ”direct_messages” API that should ensure the message will be interpreted as a private message on a server side. As I see @kassiopeia sent you public message, and this is why you had "Reply” menu item in AndStatus in the first place. For private messages you would not have the Reply option, only ”Direct message”. In addition, testing Direct messages on Loadaverage.org server, I found out that this feature doesn't work properly: the server posts my Direct message successfully, but obviously encounters some internal problem and return HTTP 500 INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR. Conclusion: confirming what I was told earlier by GNU Social developers, Direct messages in GNU Social (almost) don't work.
@vitnir This bug was fix for Pump.io. Where did you encountered it now? Please give more details. That reply, which became public anyway :-) You could post this to my email also...
@pztrn Thank you, and what's about discovery of open GNU Social instances? @clacke Public timeline is taken from statuses/public_timeline.json of the GNU Social instance. It contains all messages that are publicly available on this instance. AndStatus doesn't sync it by default, but it can be synced manually. "Global search” in AndStatus searches on the server among messages from this Public timeline, as I understand. @hfaust @gallux89
@pztrn Some time ago I noticed that discovery of open GNU Social instances stopped working. Is there a chance for the service to work again? @hfaust Imagine that AndStatus has the ”Whole known network” menu item. You click on it and what exactly should be there? The more concrete is your description, the better answer I will be able to give you.
@cow2001 Currently there are two ways to copy a text of a message: 1. Share the message to any text editor or to Clipboard (there is free app for this sharing...). This way even some metadata is shared... 2. Start editing/creating a message. Now try to open context menu of any existing message: there are new context menu items there: ”Copy text to Clipboard and ”Copy @author to clipboard” https://loadaverage.org/attachment/3243288
