Algernon WhistlewrightThe highest recorded wind gust in the storm yesterday was 74 mph. That is hurricane force wind. That, along with hail, destroyed my garden, did a number on my fence, and tore up my roof. We were all booty hurt by this until we drove around town today and saw trees that had fallen onto houses, fences, or cars. Parts of town have been without power since the storm, and some snapped power poles are still down 24 hours later. Right around the corner from us a carport is on someone's roof, someone who didn't have a carport before. All in all we were fortunate and I shan't be complaining. https://gnusocial.no/url/554381https://gnusocial.no/url/554382

Algernon Whistlewright#storynotes The short story The Dead Zone has taken a rather unexpected turn. I got to thinking about what a nation in a perpetual state of war would be like. Not like the US today where we give lipservice to the war but like the US in WW2 where everyone was committed to the war effort. You know a nation obsessed with the war, viewing and believing the propaganda, fearing invasions any day etc etc... I imagine that after a few years of that the nation would be a little squirrely in the head, paranoid, fearful,... I wonder how jingoistic it would be after a while.
THe working theory is that the United States would slowly evolve (after the Nazi bombardment of the east coast) into the United State, a monolithic state at the mercy of the military complex...
But how do I keep the United State from being fascistic???
I owe some people (notably @einebiene ) an update on our quest for a #minimalist #selfsufficient and #offthegrid life. Angel and I went down to the TX Hill Country again in search of decent land. The land there is good for ranching but not much for farming. As much as I want to be there I am beginning to doubt that it will happen. Which is OK, it costs way too much to live there since the yuppies discovered it a few years ago. As far as progress on cleaning up our lives since the last update- not much has happened. I have spent too much of my time trying to stay ahead of the money so I haven't made much progress on my personal life change or on our familial life change. We were talking over the weekend and we have about reached the decision that we just need to sell off everything except for our clothes, computers, and kitchen stuff and start over again. In spite of our current money situation we are ahead of the game financially speaking. So our idea could work.
I do go to work tomorrow, not sure for how long. I have about a week's work there but that work is way ahead of schedule.
Internet bill is due tomorrow and i haven't paid it yet. I still haven't decided.
I do have some writings that needs finishing touches. I may finish them and send them to this grammarian/editor that I know and see if i can make quick on Amazon or somewhere.
I am tired, worried, and dirty. I think that the rest of my Sunday will be spent in front of the TV vegging.
