According to the shepherd NEWS file, if no log file is specified, then logs will get routed to syslog, and get a timestamp. That means that I can just run a custom syslogd, and be done with it, with no change to services, no big hacks or anything.

Not perfect, but good enough.

Okay, looks like stdout and stderr can be redirected to a file, that's great. I wonder if the log file can be a pipe? Almost like /dev/log, just not terrible.

Another big advantage of #Guix: the documentation is just so much easier to understand and follow. It's quite newbie friendly.

I'm at the point in my #NixOS adventures that the language is starting to frustrate me enough to reconsider using #Guix instead, and accept that I'll have to drop or rewrite all the little things I built upon systemd.

Right. Next up on my TODO list (for whenever I have sufficient amount of downtime) is to write a blog post about my experience about migrating away from Google, all the gotchas, all the lessons learned, and all the obstacles and hoops I had to jump over to leave it all behind.

I find it quite funny that a Google Takeout of an account does not include quite a lot of things, and there's absolutely no indication that they will not be exported. Nor is there an obvious way to take some of them out.

Contacts, calendars, passwords, and youtube videos weren't included in my takeout. Some of those were... surprising, and I actually lost some historical videos, because they were on a youtube account linked to one I deleted, but the takeout didn't include the youtube acc.

@emacsen I put SSH on a port other than 22. Not a single attempt was made there in the past 5+ years except legit ones.

I considered all alternatives too, even implemented some, but bots were still hitting my 22 port, and sometimes I even managed to lock myself out when I accidentally used the wrong key and fail2ban blocked me.

So I moved the port, and realized that in my case, everything else was unnecessary. Non-standard port + key-only is sufficiently obscure.

@emacsen As a little fun, I also set up endlessh on port 22, so bots waste quite a bit of time trying to get there.

Longest connection there was 4 days downloading a banner.

@ru @inhji @aral @humanetech Drone/Woodpecker + Gitea are very easy to set up together. I can share a docker-compose.yml once I'm home (in a couple of hours).

Been using that pair for 4+ years now, gone through multiple upgrades, almost all flawless. The single time I had trouble, was my own fault for not reading upgrade notes.

@kev I wonder if they'd be upset if their dentist didn't practice at home, drilling teeth every day to maintain their passion for their craft. Or perhaps they want firemen putting out fires at home too, to maintain their passion? What if there's no fire? Should they start one?

Looking further, it was added in 2011, some seven years after I stopped maintaining it. They updated it to use GnuTLS 3.0 APIs, and bundled it with the library.

I should look up my old emails, to see if they contacted me. They might have, but my memory doesn't go that far back.

Software archeology can be such fun!

I still have the original Gnu Arch repository for CryWrap. I should convert it to git and upload it for archival purposes, I suppose.

While browsing the GnuTLS NEWS file today, I learned that for a while, its distribution included a tool I wrote ages ago (CryWrap), and it was only removed in 2016, some 12 years after I stopped maintaining it.

I didn't even know it was distributed with GnuTLS until today!
