I'd like a one for ten account. Where I pay the subscription for 10 accounts and get one. The other nine get given to people that need them.

If we believe in helping each other have access to these tools and the tools have marginal costs per user, then putting that front and center into the economics of the platform would make sense.

I usually agree with everything you write. But I'm going to say it:

Twitter isn't a public space.

Comparing two cities which are both public spaces, to one public space (mastodon) and one private space (twitter) is difficult.

Why people choose the private party is a serious point worth acting on. No problem with that argument.

The research suggests people left twitter too quickly anyway. A more protracted campaign of inviting folks over would have worked better.

The nuance I wish to add is about how communities can own what they occupy.

Being together in one space is the whole game in community; owning together is next level.

Requim, Free Software has never been a socialist project. The convergences are coincidental. And if you ask the old guard, a lot of them are libertarians who to be honest seem to think software development budgets come from universities or parents.

There is a lot more about the economics of Software Freedom, and also the economics of cohesion, control, convenience and community.

Managed to get a prototype of the group translucency feature @jfml was asking about the other day.

When you enter a group in #inkscape today, the status bar changes but that's about it. With this change, all other objects not in the group become 80% translucent allowing you to see that you are inside a group and which one on canvas.

Yeah, pretty much.

But both are misaligned economics.

Proprietary is far to easy to extort money and ignore user's actual needs.

And Free Software is far too hard to earn money so most work is volunteer and doesn't have any duty to pay attention to user's needs.

We need to fix this by inviting users into contributing to projects. Making that possible to do at all is very new.

The US is not exactly one country. It's more like 50 waring states bolted together by a fairly thin federal system. Europeans would be surprised at how much the fed doesn't actually control and what is done is controlled by proxy.

Regardless. The first past the post system in both the US and UK create a "loudest mouth wins" system, which makes it appear like the countries are rabidly crazy. But they're actually just subjugated non-democracies.
