I got the voting card (https://www.val.se/servicelankar/other-languages/english-engelska/voting-cards.html) for this round of elections in the system neither I nor my parents elected to or wanted to be a part of. I chose to divide my voting card in one for the imposed self-determination usurping violence monopoly (State) and one for the cooperation inhibiting injustice fueled economic violence (Capitalism), then put both of those on⦠the fire.
@xxvii Mostly it just doesn't say anything. _Why_ should you leave Google? The reason seems to be "the alternative is superior" but doesn't discuss that people use Google because it's a one-stop-shop for many things (and keeping track of, learning and _switching between_ - I count in the article - at least 10 different services is probably _the_ biggest hurdle for people).
And the comment about FastMail not supporting OpenPGP is just bullcrap because it's got nothing to with the e-mail provider. (you never, ever do OpenPGP in the browser).
@strypey Statistics and "followers" and "views" etc... Come on. That's pretty shallow, isn't it? I wouldn't want to communicate with someone who just wants to have a discussion to get their ranking up.
@strypey There's a difference between just trying to reach outside one's social circles and doing analysis of other peoples' behaviour (from which you adapt your communication strategies to maximise profit/outreach).
The !fediverse is open by design so users themselves can find, subscribe etc. interesting content. Sharing whatever content one finds is done via links of trust.
@strypey If the purpose of your statement regarding action on climate change is to reach as many people - or target the "right audience" - it is not social communication. It's propaganda. Regardless of whether you think the content of your preaching is something everyone "just has to know!". I don't think it's beneficial to promote and support this kind of behaviour.
Unless of course y'all think it's a good idea to have a battle of "who thinks they can reach the most", in which case you've reinvented all the social issues over on Facepoop.
Are you sure that people who can't figure that out are really going to read more than 3 coherent words in a sentence before zapping over to some YouTube video?
@mmn@dansup@bob I think there's a difference between letting 3rd parties build tools vs. building them yourself and packaging them in by default.
For example. some vain Instagram users download apps that show graphs of follows, unfollows, etc. But users have to seek those out and developers have to build those. Should the pixelfed project's official stance be to enable or encourage that use case? Implementation and design will matter.
@forteller I'm not entirely sure about the context of your post, but I just want to point out that what people think they want is not necessarily what they actually want/need. We don't have to be populistic if being so is counterproductive. More users is not an inherently good thing.
@dansup @bob I think this is a very interesting discussion. Just because we _can_, should we really do it? There are choices we can make to create a less competitive and more social space for people to enjoy. Just because there are statistics everywhere doesn't mean we have to buy into that paradigm. Just because classes in society exist today doesn't mean we need to maintain such a social order for all future.
