off to my #hammock now: good night gute Nacht !tzaf !fediverse! #tomorrow mor #networking and tweaking #Mint on Dennis
-
while I'm at it and have a good (NFS) connection between Dennis (Live Mint/Cinnamon) and the #NAS, I'm finishing some initial backups. Once that's done (and checked) I'm ging to install it. #networking !linux #distros #byebyefedora

@mk good night gute Nacht !tzaf !fediverse! more distro-fun and backup-fun #tomorrow #networking

@mk And now that I know how to set up NFS, I should do it on Nikola as well, so the real backup fun can begin! And once that's done it will be little Sofia's turn. And then Marie will have to get by with Samba. :) #networking #itsfinallystartingtobefun

Yay! managed to set up NFS (server) on the NAS and client on Dennis (Mint Live session) and now it's copying a backup of Dennis' home directory to the NAS :D #networking #gettingtherestepbystep

still struggling with the #networking but making slow progress: can connect with one user but not another; can write files, but not delete :( I'd like to *just work* by now !grrr

@mk ...and sure enough, there is network-manager-gnome, the tray applet for controlling NetworkManagerno longer installed (how come???) - let's try re-installing it! #networking

rofl - comment on a howto using samba to share: "Hello sir. I am wonder if it be capable for able to make this soft run with the Microsoft Visual Basic 6 instead of Samba soft. Samba is not cost which not a professional as the Microsoft professional softs. Thank you." #networking #humor

@mk and now: first a #tea and then off to the market for fruit and the supermarket for milk. #turningupthemusic #networking

too late now to start changing SSH config, but I did write up my fix for the user IDs. On day I'll dump all of these documents in a wiki. or something. but it helps writing things down anyway: you'll remember more later about how to fix problems. #NAS #networking

my idea for a Raspberry Pi (if I can manage to do that) is to put a Linux server on it and then an LDAP server; then use the latter as as LDAP server for my growing network. That way I don't have to keep a "big" machine running just for LDAP services. #amidreaming #networking !raspberrypi

step 1: mounting hard disks into the NAS #hardware #networking

I connected the 'refurbished' "Istanbul" drive to Adele which now sits on its final location and is connected to the new switch, and browsed photos on it from Vienna using Nikola via Samba - seeing them on a big screen for the first time! - it all works flawlessly. Extremely happy with today's progress! #networking !photography

I decided that it's better to buy a second 8-port Gigabit switch (about €43) - and use cables I already have - than buy 4 extra 10m cables (just under €40) and still have too (just) little room on my first Gigabit switch; the FRITZ!box has two Gigabit ports, so... off to the shop to see what they have in the shop, otherwise I'll order via web. #networking

my understanding so far: I can mount a samba filesystem (actually my ext4 drive as presented by the USBstation) by using fstab *instead of* gigolo; for that I don't need a samba user but just normal users, and I can specify user, group, and file and directory creation masks. this should enable me to avoid teh permission errors I get when trying to delete a file or directory on the share. #learning #networking #linux #samba
-
@mcscx the point is not so much the mechanics as the concept! I've never quite 'gotten' masks until now. It's not only samba, of course, but masks do play a role, so I'd better understand what that role is :) #networking
-
in order to understand how samba deals with file & directory permissions, I just found I will also have to familiarize myself with *masks*. ugh. #networking #study #busyday :)

@mk I need to let all this sink in and then experiment a bit, but the referenced thread ^ seems to hold the clues for how to control this. That's a nice exercise for today - but first I have physio, and I need to start getting ready for that! #networking
-
@mk aha, some searching reveals this seems to be default behavior, and it should theoretically be possible to override that, but I'm not sure I can control that from Adele... http://forums.justlinux.com/showthread.php?117892-Files-created-through-samba-share #networking
-
@mk OK, the problem is NOT Adele server, as I now see that shared folders on Marie are *also* mounted as owned by root:root. so now the questions are: 1) is it samba client (via gogolo) doing this? 2) is this expected behavior? If 2) is 'yes' maybe I need to create a special user in group root just to access these shared folders via samba... #networking
