In case you're wondering why some things IPv6 don't work, here's a useful service: http://test-ipv6.com/ . Guess what: I found out that my Firefox was set to (default!) disable IPv6 DNS lookups - only direct-to-IP connections would work. I had no idea (and why on earth would that be the default - still)?? #networking #ipv6 #firefox

#hammock time! Again a lot of work today, no real progress - except to find that Linode's DNS actually doesn't support being set up as master in a master-slave relationship. So, maybe write a few more notes and start from scratch with another possible solution. Ugh. #networking #linode #dns

After a whole day of trials and getting advice on #linode IRC channel, HE still isn't able to "pull" a zone from Linode (or at least this one). Giving up (for now) on letting Hurrican Electric "pull" a slave zone for this domain. That also implies that if I manage to set up a cron job to maintain part of that domain with Dynamic DNS, those Dynamic records will not be pulled automatically by HE: I can set up a "backup" domain there, but keeping it in sync will be all manual. :( #networking #dns The only alternative I can think of is to run a private DNS and getting that to AXFR the domain - but I'll visit that later.

Waiting for the latest change @ Linode DNS to propagate so Hurricane Electric DNS is allowed to pull the zone to maintain a slave zone. (Thanks to good help on #linode IRC channel - I'd forgotten that you need to set up the zone so it gives permission to the specific 'slave' DNSs.) Again, it takes longer than expected so I'm just going to sleep and see what's what #tomorrow. Anyway, step 3 of the "Backup plan" almost finished. #networking

Yay! I managed to actually use the Linode API with a properly constructed URL to update the IP addresses (IPv4 *and* IPv6) matching my NAS. That's the core of setting this up as DNS - by putting the 2 requests in a script to be regularly executed by a cron job. #happy that's a major step forward today: it took negotiating a few hurdles, but I got where I wanted to be :D #networking #APIfun

Getting my head round (part of) the Linode API now. Not so hard, it's well-documented! This is fun, really. #networking #linode #api

Now, if I try to connect to the new subdomain via SSH (no parameters given), or from the browser (no port specified), it just hangs. That's GOOD, because nothing is (or should b) listening to port 22 or 80. Succes! (so far). On with the next steps in my plan... lots of bits and pieces to hammer together but I made a good start. :) #networking

Also, I made a wild guess and found that indeed there is such a thing as 'ping6' which you can use to test whether there is something 'alive' at an Pv6 address (but - on Mint LMDE at least - it doesn't do a DNS lookup) #networking

I have now written out a 15-step plan for setting up my 'syncing and dancing' backup system. Actually the hardest part is that it involves several not-really-linux systems like phone (Android), tablet (Android), NAS (ADM), Fritz!Box router (in Amsterdam), and (???) router (in Groningen). I suspect (but have not yet verified) that the Ziggo router in Groningen runs some type of Windows. The only real Linux machines will be my laptop, workstation (to be upgraded/replaced) and netbook. #networking #backup #SSH #dynamicDNS --- Now that all the steps are written out, I can just start and work myself through them. I hope I have studies enough by now that this will be easy(ish). :) --- Yes, I'll keep notes! (I always do when installing/configuring stuff - at least when it's for the first time.)

Hurrican Electric's way to write an example IPv6 address: 2001:db8:beef:cafe::1 :D #networking

Oh, lovely !TIL that Hurricane Electric now also has network tools for mobile devices (iThings as well as Android): http://networktools.he.net/ #networking

@clacke I just found out that you can also do a self-hosted Dynamic DNS from Linode: "Dynamic DNS Using The Linode API" https://travismaynard.com/writing/dynamic-dns-using-the-linode-api - a nice write-up that also explains how Dynamic DNS actually "works". Sweet! #networking #selfhosted #dynamicdns #dns #linode

Learned that while my current provider in Amsterdam (Xs4all) effectively gives me a static IP address (although not garanteed), my provider in Groningen (Ziggo) does not. So I'll have to use DynamicDNS to make my NAS reliably reachable from outside (which is one thing I need). #networking #DNS #DynDNS

A good night's sleep helped a great deal - I'm now busy gathering information for all #networking problems and actually beginning to see a way forward. And I have not been falling asleep since getting up at 6:30 :)

Good morning !tzag all in !fediverse and !tempfix. Already at work on my first task for today: setting up port forwarding on my router (Fritz!Box fon WLAN 7360), so I can make remote connections with SSH. Reading up on how to do this so I actually understand what I'm doing ;-) (Found some web pages. Need more !coffee) #networking

@bobjonkman, I think I'm finding that !mesh #networking w/ #802.11s is not nearly as hard as everyone makes it out to be: https://github.com/o11s/open80211s/wiki/HOWTO
