   Completing the great Roomba 531 ("R2") shakedown today, after installing new brushes and a battery, poor R2 would run for a few minutes and then complain about needing the brush cages emptied of debris.But there was no debris.The real problem? Dirt caked inside the gearbox on the sweeper deck. Pulled it apart, cleaned it up, lubricated the axles and gears ... good as new!(and runs for the full battery again!)

   So happy to have been able to sit in as an audience member in a M.Sc. thesis defense at Laurentian University today. I really enjoyed the talk and the research. I learned a lot about measuring background radiation in proprietary devices (where you are not allowed to know the manufacturing process).    It is nice to sit and listen to an episode of “Quirks and Quarks”. This marvelous science program on CBC Radio was first brought to my attention by colleagues at McGill and UBC when I was a graduate student. I have been a fairly regular listener ever since. I especially like how cross-cutting (eclectic) are the topics that come together to make a single episode. In the latest, we go from dolphins to foxes to Neanderthals hunting 13 ton elephants to rubble-pile asteroids to particle physics. Wow!

   Installed a new rechargeable battery and brushes in our oldest Roomba, a 531 model nicknamed “R2”.     I have been very interested in this paper lately, as it bears on the question of how many neutrons we would see in HALO when supernova neutrinos strike the experiment https://arxiv.org/abs/2212.11295I am keen on understanding the prediction uncertainty in lieu of the measured uncertainty of the neutrino-lead cross section.

    Why I’m not worried about my students using ChatGPT https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/02/06/college-students-professor-concerns-chatgpt/ I agree with a great deal in this. I too had, years before ChatGPT, the ”why put 99% of your effort into stopping the 1% who might cheat” realization. Pour your effort into your teaching and mentoring. Cheters will fail by their own hand, now, soon, or later. They plant the seeds of their own demise. And I like turning chat bots into classwork.

      @steve My basic computer skills class at the community college has some traits in common with wood shop, I guess. My students are expected to show their work and demonstrate their ability to use the tools. ChatGPT can’t stand in their shoes for them and actually do the work step by step in front of the class.

      Indeed! Same for classes with writing or other skills ... ChatGPT offers a chance to do what amounts to the best kind of learning anyway: do it live, do it in class, do it together and share and discuss and struggle. Passive learning can happen outside of class.

    Had some fun today tracking down the code issues in HALO data processing. These caused processing to fail on about 1% of all HALO data.Each nominal HALO data-taking run lasts 24 hours. Running for 10 years almost continuously, HALO has over 6000 runs. (Not all runs are nominal! 😉)But you can't argue with the up-time ... typically better than 98-99% annually!
