Cross-site group joining is easy. The aliases don't always work though. -

I guess if he's using the pull-down menu he is just selected the vinilox group. I saw the "!" thinking he was just sending it that way, but he could be doing both. I think it's working as desired though, so I'd say just slowly walk away and don't touch anything! -

That said, I've only over used private groups as a test to see that they actually work.
I think groups are also useful for organizations, but my life wouldn't significantly change if !NEF or !OSP went to following those as tags. Having the group means there aren't duplicates, at least on a single instance. Over on twitter, RynoTheBearded ends up in the Occupy Oakland stream all the time because he has a show called "OO". He's based in Tupelo, MS, and I wish he'd get the idea that freedom is more than just !CCMusic.
