Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 16:15:22 UTC Stephen Sekula Thanks to somebody over on GNU Social mentioning that they found it hard, as an average user, to get started with pump.io, I wrote up this wiki page on "Getting Started with Pump.io": http://polari.us/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=gettingstartedwithpumpio Comments welcome. I especially welcome other tips people would like to have available! - Former Bob Jonkman -- Please use the new server at https://gs.jonkman.ca and jrobb like this.

dragnucs (dragnucs@quitter.se)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 16:27:04 UTC dragnucs @steve I see no need to start with pump.io while I am now a !gnusocial user. -
Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 18:22:31 UTC Stephen Sekula @dragnucs Not forcing anyone to do anything. Merely lowering the barrier to entry. Plenty of interesting people on different networks. For me, it makes no sense to be provincial. @mcscx@quitter.se likes this. -

chris (chris@quitter.se)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 19:03:51 UTC chris @steve I already have an account. pump is english only and has no translation yet. So there is only english people. -
Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 19:13:37 UTC Stephen Sekula @dragnucs I share that value. I just want there to be more info out there about getting started on pump.io. I prefer its privacy model, as do others. Public when you want to be, private when you need to be. -
Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 19:30:27 UTC Stephen Sekula OK, I've heard from a few people in response to this post about why they don't use or don't like pump.io. I would think it would be obvious, but I wrote this guide for people who are _interested_ in trying out pump.io or who tried it out very early on and never gave it a second look but might want to now. If you don't like pump.io, that is fine; but there is no need to broadcast it here in response to a helpful guide. I'm just trying to do some positive good here. You don't have to read the guide and you don't have to use pump.io.
I happen to like pump.io, diaspora, and gnu social all for different reasons. I use them all. And I bridge between them. That's my choice. Not using one other the other is a fine choice, but it's unnecessary to broadcast it in response to my original post.
If you have a specific thing you'd like in pump.io, I am sure that an email to evan@e14n.com would be appreciated; certainly, check out the current list of bugs and features and see if others have already made the request. If you can program or translate and want to make pump.io better, your contributions will certainly be welcomed.jrobb and @mcscx@quitter.se like this. -
Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 19:50:29 UTC Stephen Sekula @chris@quitter.se : can you clarify what you mean by pump.io not having translation yet and that there are only English people? For instance: https://identi.ca/trc/note/ED7DPlbLTrSVesiAyvXD_A (I translate Tyng-Ruey with Google Translate, for now), or how about https://identi.ca/gh00str/note/V8BXGKljSO2GkX8icdeKAg (German) or https://identi.ca/larjona/note/krt4MdRVTKGx8k2B80kdXQ (Spanish). Do you mean that pump.io doesn't support automatic translation of languages other than your own? I didn't even know that GNU Social did that... -

Stephen Sekula (steve@chirp.cooleysekula.net)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 20:49:13 UTC Stephen Sekula That is good to hear. Will that totally replace the Twitter API? -
MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Thursday, 07-Aug-2014 21:55:01 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ Nah, that'd mean software most people using #statusnet have gotten used to won't work. But it will mean that clients with support for both won't have to use the Twitter API (which is pretty restricted and crappy altogether, so if there'll be a GNU social 2.0 - it will not be included there :) Stephen Sekula likes this.Stephen Sekula repeated this. -
