Whether implementations interpret this as one or the other varies, so probably should support both ...-

However, I don't enjoy an OStatus vs ActivityPub narrative; AP owes a lot of its design from the history of OStatus and probably could not exist without it (primary design even written by same person).
We've long had a fractured federation, and even trying to extend OStatus has not been welcomed; I hope in the long run AP brings more unity than division.

Christine Lemmer-Webber (cwebber@octodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Sep-2017 00:12:51 UTC Christine Lemmer-Webber Throughout the process of AP I did also try to reach out to everyone I knew of in the fediverse space. If I missed you somehow, I'm sorry (I always feel guilty that somehow I could be doing better); input was welcome and even still is moving forward with the Community Group; even the core design of AP is mostly done there's still much much more to be done moving forward.

That said, I think almost all of us prefer to keep the existing fediverse together and add the now-separate federation (diaspora and compatibles) and pumpiverse ... we really are better together than separate.Hallå Kitteh likes this.Hallå Kitteh repeated this. -

This is not accurate. -
Hallå Kitteh (clacke@social.heldscal.la)'s status on Tuesday, 05-Sep-2017 07:37:19 UTC Hallå Kitteh @cwebber The way I hear it, it was there. All the way from "Dude, that's not a good way to do it, it will break assumption X" only, to "I could help you design this part".
But @gargron was in too much of a hurry to get his features in, and preferred "here's how I read the [woefully incomplete and outdated] specs" over "here's how the installed base actually uses these protocols". Now people in the old community are burned out on trying to get things synced up.
There's a lot of mudslinging both ways, and people have all kinds of weird opinions about Mastodon and Gargron, but a lot of people on the Mastodon side seem to think "They just hate our freedom from abuse!", and that's not how it went down.
OStatus as practiced hasn't been at a standstill since 2013, there is an admin community that has added little fixes here and there, coordinating with each other, and Mastodon development hasn't been run in that collaborative way, it has been a move-fast-and-break-things effort.Stephen Michael Kellat likes this.Stephen Michael Kellat repeated this. -

After a while, I'd had enough. Hallå Kitteh repeated this. -

I guess that question belongs to this convo. :-)
Presumably yes. Also JSON vs XML issues.
