@michaelheart :-) but pls check other users' experiences with the #OrangePi. Some ppl reported having difficulties with them→
-
Tried to tear down this laptop to get a drop of oil into the screeching fan. Broke the case around the LCD, which seems to have resolved the flickering LCD. The fan no longer screeches but makes an exciting rhythmic grinding noise! This is the most complicated laptop I've ever tried to tear down.
I'll find a purpose for it until it decides to burn out, I guess. I was going to use it as a network bridge between my parents' house and my own but maybe I'll just rip DVDs with it or set up a temporary file server...
My son asked if he could have it but there isn't much it'll do that he'd be interested in and I'd rather put it to some sort of useful purpose.

@hobbsc often there are "how to open the $LAPTOPMODEL case" videos on youtube! Sometime there are hidden screws under rubber pads.
-
@hobbsc have you been able to remove the keyboard (often held by 2 latches)?
-
@hobbsc btw I use !bananaPi to create OpenVPN network bridges. Very stable, no noise, ~4Watts.
-
@hobbsc the OrangePi is sold cheap on AliExpress but many ppl experience stability issues. Others say you just need a 3A(or so) power supply
-
@hobbsc anyway if you get yourself a Beagle/Orange/Banana you'd have a new toy and: your son could have the laptop to gather experience ;-)
-
@mitchell @hobbsc the #orangepi, has much higher CPU clock (1800MHz?), so the need for more Amp is no surprise. Also gets hotter → heatsink
-
@michaelheart →but that may be outdated information. Maybe I would order 1 OPi and do some testing (stability...), then order the 2nd one
-
@michaelheart I use the !bananaPi (1st generation, dual core, S-ATA) for a couple of things & am very satsfied with its stablity &perfromnce
-
@michaelheart also pls consider: all of these computers have only 1 NIC. So if you need a 2nd port you need a USB/NIC adapter or VLAN, etc.
-
@michaelheart I have an !rpi B and an #Odroid c2, too. I haven't done much with the Odroid, though, until now.
-
@mcscx Which distro do you use with the #BananaPi?
-
@mmn I use Bananian and Raspbian (for BananaPi) on my BananaPis. Both are Debian-based.
