Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Saturday, 14-May-2022 14:50:13 UTC Mike Harley I think I'm going to try to install Debian again. I've learned about the non-free repos!
Still have to kind of muddle through using grub though because for some reason my computer boots to grub when using the debian install usb image so that's not fun. Idk what i'm doing!

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Saturday, 14-May-2022 14:50:06 UTC Mike Harley @pseudoramble I'm still pretty new to Linux and have only ever used pop os. Attracted to what I understand their philosophy to be. Prime movers so just want to be closer to the source.
Plus if it doesn't meet all my needs then I'll try something else and will have the experience of having used debian as a daily driver.

I don't talk to any one else on xmpp unfortunately. I have been able to get many of my friends to use Signal at least.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Mar-2022 23:53:12 UTC Mike Harley @ruffni both fair comments and concerns! I'm sure some very smart people in Germany weighed all the considerations and came up with this solution but ugh, it's just hard for me to understand how buying gas from Russia is better than buy Uranium from Canada.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Tuesday, 22-Mar-2022 13:42:00 UTC Mike Harley It blows my mind that Germany, or any other country would decommission their nuclear power plants in favor of buying gas from Russia.
I'd think that a country would value energy independence, nevermind the carbon being released into the atmosphere by the burning of fossil fuel.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Saturday, 12-Mar-2022 12:57:56 UTC Mike Harley I don't want to run a newsletter or maximize my engagement with customers. I want to allow people to receive my blog posts to their email inbox. I really want a distribution list that allows people to add and remove themselves. What words do I type into DDG?

I'm not sure if this is by design or if it's a bug but when I set the privacy settings to custom (I want to block all cookies except my exceptions), it doesn't keep the settings between sessions. When I close and reopen the browser, it's set back to Strict instead of Custom.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Monday, 14-Feb-2022 12:24:14 UTC Mike Harley I sincerely hate that Mozilla is "working with a team from Facebook" to do ad tracking. But other than like Tor (which seems to be actively hostile to non-nation state actors), there is no one *not* doing some sort fucking weird ass "privacy" ad tracking. Hate.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Monday, 14-Feb-2022 12:24:13 UTC Mike Harley I thought IceCat was going to be the answer I've been looking for as a browser but I can't get it to work. It doesn't load the login screens for fastmail, indieweb.social or even feedbin. I suspect it's whatever thing they're doing with javascript but it also makes the main services I use unusable. Not great bob.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Monday, 14-Feb-2022 12:24:13 UTC Mike Harley Ok, I think I'll try to make Tor browser work on desktop as a daily driver.
Strangely enough, Tor actually makes my email less secure because I want to disable the 2fa since Tor doesn't allow one to make exceptions for saved cookies.

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Monday, 14-Feb-2022 02:38:28 UTC Mike Harley idk, vivaldi feels like a big ole no for me. Why isn't there a strict mode preset for privacy settings? Why are all these google services enabled by default? Why isn't "ask sites not to track me" enabled by default? Why is there a notes app built into the browser?

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Thursday, 03-Feb-2022 12:10:00 UTC Mike Harley @rysiek there's more than one Russia/Ukraine news?! lol
The news I read seems to indicate that Russia is threatening invasion of Ukraine by massing 100k troops on the Ukraine border. Putin wants concessions about NATO expansion etc. Do Europeans view this as the OMG crisis that my news seems to say it is? Do Europeans want to do anything about it?

Mike Harley (obsolete29@indieweb.social)'s status on Tuesday, 18-Jan-2022 14:56:22 UTC Mike Harley @colinkiama I think it would depend on the implementation wouldn't it? I think it's a mistake to think of federation like blockchain, where it's possible for everyone to have an entire copy of the blockchain. In your example, Twitter doesn't need to have the entire content of Instagram data to show Instagram items on a Twitter timeline. Once the authentication and federation bits are established, I think it could be a simple reference to an item ID that's provided by Instagram.
