https://runyourown.social/ tells such a nice story and I wish I could convince friends and ex-colleagues to join a laid-back "friend camp" such as Mastodon (or an instance we'd share).

Truth is they're all on Twitter or on their own company Slack.

Same problem with family and friends and WhatsApp. I'd love to host or join an XMPP instance or try out Snikket. But then I'd be talking to myself...

How does everyone cope with this?

  @wouter for xmpp, I have 1 friend who is of a similar mind and using my self hosted snikket instance is our primary form of communication. I don't talk to any one else on xmpp unfortunately. I have been able to get many of my friends to use Signal at least.
