@clacke In UK houses, skirting boards are low wooden planks at the joint of the wall and the floor. Because most of the walls are drywall and the floors often laminate, that is a convenient way to make the join and cover any gaps. But the do tend to collect dust so you have to clean them every now and then to avoid mould. If I was rich I'd have a house designed without them :-)
