Early on in dating my future wife, I noticed that even though she's objectively brilliant, she doesn't pay a whole lot of attention to her environment. One of my favorite things to do is randomly buy her flowers and place them somewhere in plain view in the house and see how long it takes her to notice them. We're going on day 3 right now for a bouquet on the kitchen counter. 💐 🤣

Is it over the top to remind everybody right in middle of a discussion about DR servers that you're going to be on vacation on Monday and including a 😏 at the end?

Ever just take a step back and look at what you just typed in and think to yourself, "I have a really weird job." I used this command this morning:

sed -e 's/\ /\|/g'

I know exactly what this does and I mean to do it, but looking at that command it's no wonder so many people think computers are wires and black magic.

Am I the only one that feels bad when the new guy really puts in an effort and figures out how to do something in 10 overly complicated steps, when if he'd have asked I could have told him how to do in 1 command?

@SonoMichele I still FEEL like I'm the new guy, but then I remember I've been here for 12 years and there's virtually no one still around that has seniority over me. That's when I have a panic attack over just how screwed we are if something goes really wrong. :)

Hm, client is concerned a 4096bit PGP encryption key isn't secure enough. They want me to put the file into a password protected Zip file and then PGP encrypt it.

I can thankfully say that after I replaced it, I never have. No plans for that to change.

We had an antenna attached to the side of our house, and when we changed channels on the TV, we had to go outside and rotate the antenna to point in a different direction per channel. Talk about a nightmare during the winter. You'd just watch a show because hell no I'm not going out there.

@devinprater Heh, a DVD player IS a special player for today's teens. When he watches Netflix, he usually starts a movie on the bus ride home, and when he gets home he just hits stop, turns on the TV, opens the Netflix app, and starts the movie right where he left off. No players or discs or anything. The idea that Netflix used to send something physical to you that you needed to put into a player made him laugh out loud.

My wife and I just had to explain to my teen how phones at one point needed to be plugged into a wall. Oh, and Netflix used to actually mail you a disc that you'd watch in a special player and then mail back.

I feel SUPER old right now.

@Mundon That's really good actually! My wife and I have been married now for 15 years, and she corrects me almost every time I say something to her. No, it doesn't matter what language I use.

@Mundon @codeHaiku I've been interested in German as well. I'm currently learning Spanish as I live in the American South West, and Spanish is spoken all over the place here. Seems like it would be handy to know some. My great grandmother on my dad's side came to the United States from Germany, and never learned English. Even her daughter (my grandmother) always spoke English with a German accent. I'd like to become at least somewhat capable in Spanish before jumping to something new though.
