I always thought the marketing for ChromeOS was hilarious "you don't need a file system" (because we don't have it) and "you don't need apps" (because we don't have them), and then of course, they proudly announced adding all those things eventually.

@ainmosni @GossiTheDog There's nothing inherently wrong, of course, with meeting your spouse at work, but it happens so much more often in these companies because the employee's entire social circle *is* the company.

@ainmosni @GossiTheDog The free on-site amenities and events are huge. It's not just about keeping you on campus, it's about tying your whole life to the company. A few of the people I have argued with the loudest were "Googler with Googler spouse" which is just... absolute corporate success. The entire family is company-owned.

@GossiTheDog The other fun fact is that a bunch of these companies have like 100,000 employees, and they get *really upset* if you point out on HN or the like that they are stanning their employer.

I have been accused of "doxxing" for merely pointing out a guy loudly justifying why Google was the best at everything was a manager on their Ads team.

@clacke It's especially DNS when you jokingly invoke the DNS line because of how confident you are it isn't DNS.

@jwcph @FalconMarkSix The iPhone is *drastically* better on privacy, and you can buy a two year old refurbished one and still get longer support than a new Android.

Don't get me wrong, Apple's closed ecosystem isn't ideal, and I push for regulations that force them to open up their market, but there's absolutely no question Apple has a much better privacy stance.

@clacke That sounds absolutely terrifying, in no small part because I spend a lot of time learning about home construction and electrical wiring and can't fathom what would even do that.

@JenWojcik It's always been pretty wild to me that there's been no real downside to companies trying to union bust. This finally makes it a bad idea.

But yeah, there is a stunning amount of stuff we do as humans not because we have to but because society has pressured us to believe it's the right way to do it, and sometimes it's entirely fine to set that stuff aside.

But these roles were so minimal in TOS it is not hard to rewrite them a bit without drastic continuity problems. And the depth they added to Pike's TOS stories was still a work of pure brilliance.

@rysiek This is just another incident in a long line of examples why developers need to stop assuming some random third party repository (cough, npm, cough) will always serve whatever they need.

If it's critical to you, you should have a local copy of it. Period.

@atomicpoet I think the amount of conspiracy-laden garbage far outweighs the occasional quality educational video. And many tens of thousands of hours of human consciousness has been completely blown watching Grammarly ads.
