kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Tuesday, 29-May-2018 11:45:58 UTC kaniini earlier this year, for a few reasons, I was pretty depressed (I basically quit working in tech and decided to recenter on things I was actually interested in, which was largely inspired by a large chunk of my life savings got burned by a techbro when they were supposed to be saving the business, it's a long story, I've talked about it before)...
and, honestly, being able to participate in a project like Pleroma at that time was very helpful in terms of getting my mind back into a happier place.
sometimes, you need something *new* and *different* in order to get excited about things again...
so, I am glad that @lain started this thing, it has been very fun to hack on, I've learned a new programming language, made contributions to a W3C standard and I've also made a lot of friends in the process. not bad, if I do say so myself...
anyway, that's all I have to say... -

Indeed, but not all GNU Social instances are bad or evil, and I think most Mastodon users do recognize that.
In fact, the vast majority of GNU social instances are filled with friendly people who share the same values that typical Mastodon users have.
Similarly, if you look at the whole spectrum of Pleroma instances, you'll find that it is basically the same scenario as Mastodon and GNU Social, there are extreme instances using all three softwares, but in reality, most instances are just small, friendly instances with friendly people who just like to have a nice time. In fact, I had a bad interaction with a neo-nazi using Mastodon on Sunday.
In recent months, the discourse that Pleroma is some evil plot to do whatever has mostly died out. I think this is because we have proven that isn't the case. It's just software. -

the Pleroma community ethos is not the same as the ethos of the GNU social instances that Mastodon hates. the Pleroma community ethos is one of finding solutions to problems and keeping out the bullshit, whatever that may be.
yes, it is a different ethos to that of Mastodon, but it is an appropriate ethos considering what we're trying to build -- software anyone is entitled to use and contribute to.
everyone is nice in the Pleroma community, even if they are not necessarily nice in the fediverse, because not being nice means that you will be ignored -

kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Sunday, 15-Apr-2018 16:52:23 UTC kaniini my thoughts on the fediverse in a nutshell:
1. mastodon and pleroma aren't at war with each other. that is largely a war of the fringe, and is best ignored. if you stay out of only one discourse this year, make it this one.
2. more fediverse software is better than less. if you want to develop an AP server, now is a great time to do it!
3. i owe you all some simplified docs, because i keep promising them. but i hate writing things. so, eventually they will arrive. sorry it is taking so long! -

some of us are interested in dismantling empire. much of my death-threat troubles ratcheted up when i started talking about nomadic identity, so perhaps some people do not like the idea that a person could just leave an instance they dislike with near-zero cost. i dunno. i suspect we will never be 100% free of imperialistic tendency. not in this century, anyway. -

About lain + shitty jokes: if you don't like lain's jokes, that is a fair point, and if you personally don't want to use the software because of them, I can understand that.
About physical threats: i have received many DMs and e-mails over the past 2 months i have worked on Pleroma suggesting that I might be better off with a hole in my head. I enumerated a full list of proposals elsewhere. I will accept that Jo might have not intended to threaten. The timing is curious, and the subtoot was about me.
About blocking pleroma instances: absolutely do block whatever instances you want. but what is going on here, is that somebody was going around proposing *my* instance be blocked from instances where I have perfectly normal interactions, because "Pleroma is by nazis, for nazis." they were doing this in order to discourage my participation in the project and use of the software: in other words, they wanted to cut me off from my friends on the mastodon side of the network. because of the bad attention they got, they have stopped doing so, for now. I think you can agree that's not a nice thing to do. -
kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Wednesday, 11-Apr-2018 10:27:32 UTC kaniini I mean, I am just trying to make the fediverse better.
I have done work on Mastodon, and I even helped where I could with advice to make the Switter launch a success.
This is a hobby for me, not a job. I am just here to talk to my friends.
I see no reason to continue working on it if I am going to be getting death threats from people allegedly working for "social justice."
(by the way: actual people working for social change don't threaten to kill or maim people) -

kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 17:38:23 UTC kaniini dear social networking as blockchain people, what is your solution for when (WHEN) somebody posts child porn to the social network as a joke, and it's now permanently in the blockchain, meaning everyone who participates in the network now has a copy of said child porn and can go to jail at any time? -

I've been talking about a relatively conservative approach towards bringing nomadic identity into ActivityPub over here. I intend to write a blog about it this weekend with the specifics (still hammering them out). -
kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Tuesday, 03-Apr-2018 04:32:24 UTC kaniini @clacke Almost all of the observed Pleroma federation has been upgraded to AP (as well as the links between Pleroma and Mastodon instances) -

and because Pleroma supports the Qvitter and Mastodon APIs, you can use, basically any desktop or mobile app you wish with it too
for example Tusky on the Mastodon side and AndStatus on the Qvitter/GNUsocial API side -
kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Saturday, 31-Mar-2018 00:19:50 UTC kaniini at $3/month you can get hardware that can comfortably host a #pleroma instance.
pleroma is designed to be easy to host on a potato, because one of the main ideological points of the project is that the fediverse is best off when there are many small instances working together instead of larger instances -

I mean when peertube came out I was like hmm I wonder if it will be used for porn
I think that is an obvious answer now -
kaniini (kaniini@pleroma.dereferenced.org)'s status on Thursday, 29-Mar-2018 05:06:47 UTC kaniini the addition of switter to the fediverse proves that every system will evolve until one can easily access porn with it
