Twitter about to become Musk Social.
I bet some of you are very happy to be on the fediverse right now. I know I am :)

Not getting any coding done because GitHub is down? Why not take the opportunity to check out Codeberg (https://codeberg.org/), Gitea (https://gitea.com/) or GitLab (https://about.gitlab.com/install/)
@jwildeboer Opt out is a violation of GDPR.
@mihira @AstaMcCarthy @jwildeboer @humanetech @tim @noybeu Did the last one about eight years ago ;)
@jwildeboer Same router. Unbelievable violation of privacy. So Mozilla is keeping location history tied to your router. I never consented to that. If this doesn’t violate GDPR at its core, we might as well throw GDPR in the bin.
And to think Mozilla Location Services is presented during the installation process of nearly every Linux distribution.
This is a scandal.
Wow, ok, this is freaky.
New computer. Fedora Silverblue 36. Not signed into anything. Location services is on (using Mozilla location services). I’ve been living in Ireland now for 3+ years.
I open GNOME Maps app. I grant it location access. I press the “Go to current location” button.
It goes to the exact location of the home we had in Malmö, Sweden.
What. The. Fuck?
OK, so I have no idea how that’s possible. Mozilla must have somehow cached that location but how do they know it’s me?
Small is Beautiful live stream today at 5PM IST (UTC+1):
What we’ve learned so far: lessons from eight(ish) years of working against the grain of mainstream technology.
@al1r4d Because Owncast is a small web application. It’s built for one person and thus is trivial to install and use.
Peertube is great and I love Framasoft but I don’t use Peertube for the same reason I wouldn’t install YouTube just for me if YouTube was free and open source.
I have as much empathy for Germany’s projected first-world problems (should they do the right thing and cut gas imports from Russia) as Germany had for Greece during the financial crisis.
And Greece wasn’t actively funding a genocide in Europe at the time.
Ukraine: “Excuse me, if it’s not too much trouble, could you please save our lives?”
Germany: “Sorry, dahling, it would be a little uncomfortable for me right now. Do take care now!”
You know what, fuck German comfort. I couldn’t care less about German comfort. Or my own comfort here in Ireland. Fuck our comfort. People are fucking suffering and dying in the worst possible ways for fuck’s sake. AND WE ARE ENABLING IT. How devoid of humanity are we?
Yes, clearly Russia is shocked it still gets paid €1B a day by the EU and awed that it can continue to murder, rape, and torture Ukrainians with impunity.
Go us.
@dansup When you take VC, you sell the company. No ifs, no buts. We keep getting surprised as the sale usually just takes several years to complete. C’est la “exit”.
This is why VC investment is incompatible with sustainable businesses with social missions. And why I keep harping on about how we must support projects that benefit the commons from the commons (https://ar.al/notes/encouraging-individual-sovereignty-and-a-healthy-commons/)
A very good way to get a quick idea about a person is to ask them what they think of Russia. If you’re on the same page on that, you can smoothen out the other differences later.
Privacy hack: if you want to share a link to a Twitter thread elsewhere and you don’t want people to be tracked by Twitter, Inc., replace twitter.com with nitter.net

If Russia tells you it’s sunny, bring your umbrella.
@thor 🤷♂️
While speaking at the European Parliament, I once asked “I keep hearing about markets… what are we, the Ferengi Alliance or the European Union? Why aren’t we talking about fundamental rights? Human rights? Democracy?”
We must reframe our priorities.
Russia hasn’t just invaded Ukraine, it has declared war on Europe. We wait to see at what point Europe understands this.
I strongly urge you to read this whole article.
If we’re going to create better alternatives to what exist today, those alternatives must not just be different hierarchies of people who worship different gods and think they know better than everyone else.
(And I have a bit of first-hand experience that I’m talking from here: https://ar.al/notes/farewell-not-goodbye/)
