Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 05-May-2022 11:47:17 UTC Eugen π My perspective is that of an implementer, not a protocol designer. It does seem overcomplicated for benefits that I would consider neglible. I disagree the most with depending on a "DID Consortium" to be able to participate in the network...

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 05-May-2022 11:46:59 UTC Eugen π I am reading the #Bluesky #ADX architecture outline. First impression is that it seems quite complicated. The topology looks a lot like the fediverse but everything is a Merkle tree and identity is tied to something that looks a lot like a blockchain.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 04-May-2022 04:30:47 UTC Eugen π I was asked to do a video interview, but in the end they couldn't send a crew to where I live. I know the interview would be good for Mastodon, but I am so relieved I don't have to do it π

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-May-2022 12:43:08 UTC Eugen π Mastodon's monthly active user numbers have risen by 84,579 since the Twitter buyout story broke on Monday (and I do mean across the Mastodon network, not this server)

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Sunday, 01-May-2022 11:41:27 UTC Eugen π I've made a deliberate choice against a quoting feature because it inevitably adds toxicity to people's behaviours. You are tempted to quote when you should be replying, and so you speak at your audience instead of with the person you are talking to. It becomes performative. Even when doing it for "good" like ridiculing awful comments, you are giving awful comments more eyeballs that way. No quote toots. Thank's

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 25-Apr-2022 01:06:33 UTC Eugen π I remember one of the things that motivated me to look into the state of decentralized social media (and ultimately begin working on Mastodon) in 2016 were talks that a controversial billionaire might buy Twitter.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 21-Apr-2022 14:48:56 UTC Eugen π Apparently Play Store release notes are limited in size so I can't provide a detailed changelog in the style you've come to expect from Mastodon releases. Various fixes and improvements, here we come.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Friday, 15-Apr-2022 11:44:08 UTC Eugen π You know how Spamhaus wrongfully added us to their spam blocklist because some malware retrieved a public profile on here? Like, made a normal HTTP request to a public page that happened to be on our domain? Well, I obviously contacted them and had us taken down from the list, but now Kaspersky seems to have taken that information and added us to their blocklist. I've contacted them as well but this is getting ridiculous.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Apr-2022 08:11:57 UTC Eugen π @schratze Let me clarify that auto-detection was not removed out of malice towards multilingual people, but because of its wild inaccuracy.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Wednesday, 13-Apr-2022 08:11:56 UTC Eugen π @esi @schratze We are planning to allow people to add multiple versions of text to posts for different languages
-
Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 12-Apr-2022 14:11:06 UTC Eugen π Starting with Mastodon 3.5, we no longer try to auto-detect your posting language. It defaults to your interface language, unless overriden by setting it explicitly per-post in the API, or setting in Preferences -> Other.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 07-Apr-2022 12:00:09 UTC Eugen π @loweel Someone out there is saying the same about HTTP and DNS. HTTP used to be simple and straight-forward, but then came HTTP/2, and HTTP/3, and TLS, and suddenly you can't just use telnet for it anymore. But all those evolutions that make it more of a mess are necessary to support its diverse use.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 07-Apr-2022 12:00:08 UTC Eugen π @loweel ActivityPub has enabled more than a dozen independent software implementations to cooperate in the largest, to-date, decentralized social network. And if it's "a mess" because it takes a developer a bit longer to implement properly, then it's more than worth it, because that's a thing that happens once per implementation and just shouldn't count in the grand scheme of things.
It's also preposterous to assume another protocol would be simpler and maintain the same applicability.

Eugen π (gargron@mastodon.social)'s status on Thursday, 07-Apr-2022 11:56:24 UTC Eugen π Even two years on, I still have no idea which direction #Bluesky is intending to go. Though it seems like if they wanted to adopt an existing protocol, they would've already done so.
I'll only say that the challenges of building a decentralized social network are anywhere but the actual protocol. Mastodon started on one protocol, then switched to another. Decisions that matter are in product design. Marketing.
If they propose a new protocol, what would make it worth resetting all that to zero?
