Echosa (echosa@gs.sdf.org)'s status on Friday, 19-Aug-2016 20:27:32 UTC Echosa Sometimes, I feel like life would be so much easier if I could just get over my anti-Google-ness. If i could just forget my distrust and distaste for them. If I could just just live in blissful ignorance, or, at least, apathy. I try to tell myself "maybe it's not that bad." "Maybe it's just how things are." "Maybe there really isn't anything wrong with how they conduct business." I tell myself these things in my head, but my heart knows better. I read about the data collection and tracking done by Google services. I read about the insecurities and problems with Android. I hear the mumblings of "Google is evil." Is it me that's wrong? Am I over-thinking it? Should I just get over it and give in? I just... can't. For now, I'll stick with my current overlord, Apple, for email, photos, music, etc. Oh, and, of course, DuckDuckGo for searching. Also, ownCloud for cloud storage (thanks to !sdf and @smj!). I also distrust Dropbox... maybe I _am_ the problem, afterall. -
Echosa (echosa@gs.sdf.org)'s status on Wednesday, 18-May-2016 14:13:18 UTC Echosa @bob @thomask @zoowar @drymer @moshpirit This whole conversation (which is more than just this single thread) has been very enlightening and is a good conversation to have about !gnusocial. For those used to Twitter, these little caveats can be huge, or, at the very least, confusing. Privacy is a hot topic right now, as it should be.
I did a little Google Sleuthing with my username, and I found examples of my GNU Social posts on other servers. I assume that's because of how GS federation works. This is a concern to me, though. If I close my GS account and delete my content on the server I signed up on, will my content remain on the other servers, or does the deletion propagate throughout the federation? If deleting my account, or even deleting a single post, doesn't propagate through the entire system, then I don't fully own or control my own content. That's not good. Of course, I could be mistaken, so can someone either confirm or correct my statements? -
