interestingly, more modern documents are also available in HTML form, and both PDFs and HTML have hyperlinks for citations that you can follow —as long as you have the luck of belonging to an institution that subscribes to that particular journal and/or the authors shelled thousands of dollars to make it open access.

The downside of this approach is that if the software becomes too successful too fast, it ends up crippling the standard due to the lack of implementation in what becomes the de fact reference implementation (case in point, Mastodon vs ActivityPub)

It's also self ironic about the beauty standards thing. So maybe count it as a vote for Barbie, or for the double feature in the Oppie/Barbie order.
