MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Friday, 06-Apr-2018 06:23:21 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @lxoliva So with Twister I have to store the distributedly Backes up Chile pornography? And if someone's backup is badly protected, I can _become_ that identity by just loading it on to my local client? Sounds like a system I don't want to use for my everyday social activities. -

Even had to create a Google account (for which I signed up as whythefuckdoineedagoogleaccount@hethane.se) to access the web dashboard to check the mentor box... Ugh. -
MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Thursday, 05-Apr-2018 09:25:29 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @up201705417 @dansup I emailed the three addresses now and CC:d you Diogo, hoping we can make the deadline. I'm off work for today and finally have some energy to do stuff.
I _really_ appreciate both of your enthusiasm and absolutely want to make it possible for you to work on this! I apologise for not being 100% (or even 10%...) available! -

MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 22:15:09 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @HerraBRE !OStatus (via /.well-known/host-meta and LRDD such as #WebFinger) lets you create aliases on any given domain name. Your alias in !OStatus is just like #WebID, any random string. However, implementations seem to assume it should be a full WebFinger ID such as acct:mmn@hethane.se (which is actually just the human-friendly way to address a lookup endpoint).
The main issue is that the aliases/redirects need to live for as long as people remember the old identifier. Which is likely to be indefinitely. -
MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 21:45:07 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @clacke How long do you cache something that's supposed to be delivered asynchronously? If it's cached, who holds that information? If the two peers who hold this information are very seldom online at the same time, how long is an acceptable delivery delay? If magic distribution via third parties is possible, how is this information protected?
Say what, you mean that users enjoy reading and comparing fingerprints, never fail to take encryption and verification instructions seriously and also back up their secret keys in a non-ridiculous manner? Well then, I guess it's all fine and dandy. Forget I ever said anything .) -

There's an example of a peer-to-peer world where you trust nobody: Ethereum.
And as we've seen, people are not well suited to live in such a world, because they:
- make mistakes
- get scammed
- are generally bad at expressing laws with code, let alone expressing social norms with code -
MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 21:41:57 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @rysiek Users need to back stuff up. If they don't they'll inevitably lose everything. That is not user appealing. -

MMN-o ✅⃠ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 11:07:40 UTC MMN-o ✅⃠ @rysiek My point was merely to indicate that users who are their own admins must also at all times be alert and in a well-functioning mindset. Or they might end up being drunk or sneezing while trying to configure their local server and accidentally break everything without any clue of how to put it back together.
Communes ftw. -

It's interesting what hasty pseudo-realtime text communication does to people!
