MMN-o โ โ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 09:48:13 UTC MMN-o โ โ @HerraBRE account migration is not desirable. It is individualistic and counterproductive for communities. -
MMN-o โ โ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 10:07:45 UTC MMN-o โ โ @bjoern @HerraBRE I'll start by ignoring the technical and social difficulties (domain name changing... causing troubles both for lookups/computers as well as humans who remember the old address...)...
What you mention first, @bjoern, is not account migration. "Without having to start from scratch" and "without losing your connections" is only the transferral of subscriptions. We could discuss bi-directional transferrals (but why would you be able to force a remote party to subscribe to a new, possibly untrusted, server?!).
The "right to move" is still there. Restoration of backed up data is however incredibly hard to do without breaking the laws of physics. -

MMN-o โ โ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 10:16:59 UTC MMN-o โ โ @bjoern I simply wouldn't defend "the right to move". But I'd defend "the right to choose provider". One is physically impossible to do (in a secure _and_ user friendly way), the other simple as SMTP. -

It's interesting what hasty pseudo-realtime text communication does to people! -

(and perhaps more interesting for most people: how would you use a pseudonym in a network where you _are_ the node/instance?) -

MMN-o โ โ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 11:07:40 UTC MMN-o โ โ @rysiek My point was merely to indicate that users who are their own admins must also at all times be alert and in a well-functioning mindset. Or they might end up being drunk or sneezing while trying to configure their local server and accidentally break everything without any clue of how to put it back together.
Communes ftw. -

There's an example of a peer-to-peer world where you trust nobody: Ethereum.
And as we've seen, people are not well suited to live in such a world, because they:
- make mistakes
- get scammed
- are generally bad at expressing laws with code, let alone expressing social norms with codeMMN-o โ โ repeated this. -
MMN-o โ โ (mmn@social.umeahackerspace.se)'s status on Wednesday, 04-Apr-2018 21:41:57 UTC MMN-o โ โ @rysiek Users need to back stuff up. If they don't they'll inevitably lose everything. That is not user appealing. -

And if someone's backup is badly protected, I can _become_ that identity by just loading it on to my local client? Sounds like a system I don't want to use for my everyday social activities.
